Aperture or Lightroom?

Hey guys,

I've just ordered me a new macbook pro (15" retina display don't-you-know!) and I'm at a crossroads.

I've been using LR for a few years now, had about 4-5 different versions though the years and quite like it.

However, since I'm moving from PC to Mac I thought it might be time for a change. I like the idea of being able to do face detection in aperture. I have over 10000 images and being able to sort them by child, wife, or other family member is real selling point to me.

I'm wondering weather there are any peeps here who have used both and do they have any pearls of wisdom to impart?

Thanks for your time,
tris

Aperture is great, and integrates really well with the Mac (as you would expect) ..
BUT its not as good as LR imo. If you've never used LR then its great and perfectly fine, but going from LR to Aperture was a step I personally found too difficult.

It really is screaming for a proper 4 update.

I've actually moved from Aperture to LR now that it's been stuck on 3 for a long time.

I'd say definitely give it a go though if you can get a trial.

I've been using Aperture for a good few years now.

It does pretty much everything Lightroom does, aside from missing a few of the features that Lightroom has like lens distortion correction data etc.

As far as Post-Processing goes and actually working on your images, you will find you get similar results.

As Alpherah said, it integrates flawlessly with the Mac and I really like the way you organise photos and the ability to back them up in Vaults.

I have been flirting with Lightroom lately and may make the switch.
My main reason is that I've started to find that Aperture is getting a bit slow with some aspects of editing. My MacPro is getting on a bit, but it's still a quick machine. Having played with Lightroom, I find it doesn't have the same slow down when doing the same task.

Aperture actually got an update yesterday (largely because of the new MacBook resolution announced at WWDC) but I'm not sure I was very impressed. They've renamed various items and made everything grey, I suppose to reflect that they did the same with everything else in Lion. That already annoys me because it used to be quite easy to tell your folders, albums and smart albums apart from the colour, they are now all the same shade.

Waiting to see if they release an Aperture 4 is probably the only reason I haven't switched yet.

thanks for the comments guys.

I think I'll try aperture for a few days and see how i get on.

I completely fudged my LR catalogue a few months ago and lost ALL my edits from RAW files so I've got to re-do a lot of work, it's just a question of doing it this or that.

What is the face detection like?

I'm really keen on this feature but don't know anyone that's used it!

I don't really use it personally.
Basically it just attempts to identify everyone in your albums and then groups all photos of them under their name in the 'Faces' layout of Aperture. Perhaps if you need to find a picture of a person and you can't remember which album/project the photo was in, it might be of use.

The face detection is alright actually. You have to let the software know who a person is and if you confirm like 20 pictures it started to do a pretty good job after that point.

Surely you are at a T-junction :p:p:p

lol, yes. I could go left back towards MS or right towards apple. Or I could go straight on and keep running fedora :)

anyway, I have kids and always get asked to give family members pictures of them. as LR stores my images in data order it's imposable to find anything that you don't know when it was taken.

Hence why face detection is looking quite neat.

It works well, I agree.

I've just personally never found a use for it.

This is a good point, if you can forego the more advanced editing tools and get used to iPhoto first, the transition to Aperture is more seamless.
