I used the integrated tethering app on my stock HTC Sensation assuming that tethering would be included in my internet allowance like it always used to be, but after watching 2 hours of HD video on 4OD i had run up a scary bill of £60! (SCARY FOR ME AT LEAST)

Is there an app which i can get (without root) dont mind if it needs a usb connection or not, which will allow me to use my phone to tether, without the added tethering fee? So that my data usage while using the tethering app is included in my mobile internet allowance?

Thanks!

Is it actually a tethering charge or did you go over your data limit ?

2hrs of HD video could easily be a couple of gigabytes...

I'm aboad, but also officially not allowed to tether. Regularly do it with the ''wifi hotspot'' function on my SGS2 though, never had any problems. I do watch if I don't go over my 1.5gb monthly data limit. Even normal quality youtube on the phone itself got me a nice SMS at the end of the month ''you have used 90% of your allowance'' ( back then I only had 1GB), I only had one more day to go though, but I apparantly used 300mb in just 2-3 hrs of just youtube...

How does the network know the difference between tethering and normal data access?

On an Android phone it can't. Apparently iPhones snitch on their users when they tether but I believe jailbreaking sorts that.

My guess is that the OP has 500MB/1GB of data allowance (which is the norm these days) and as snowdog said a couple of hours of HD streaming would blow that in one go.

im pretty sure since the android 4.0 update it can be differentiated by the network provider. Since my phone runs android 4.0, that would explain it :/ and it wasnt HD thinking about it, i think it was reasonable quality SD and i still had some of my data allowance left afterwards.

What does you bill say??

What does you bill say??

0 minutes remaining (used about £6 of minutes)
158mb of data remaining
243 texts remaining

and a total of £49.89 on top of my usual £10 bill.

Only thing i can think of that i did was tether... :(

Im on three, the only contract they have which 'includes tethering' is the one plan, which i am not on.

i was on the sim 100 one month contract (100 minutes, 3000 texts, 1gb of data) but i have upgraded to sim 600 12 month now (600 minutes, 3000 texts, truly unlimited data) and ya it is actually unlimited. The record usage on the plan is 80gb xD

I was under the impression that if you attempted to tether with Three that they sent you to a "you can't tether" website if they worked it out:

But other people have said they can tether fine on a range of phones and plans.
If that is an additional data charge, you were paying 10p/MB according to the price plan with also says you only get 1GB of data (but you haven't used all of that anyways)

It all seems a little odd - Do you have twitter? If so, might be worth asking the guys/girls on @ThreeUKSupport to explain what the charge is.

perhaps i am mistaken... i dont know how though... But i will test it out

I can't say for sure as i'm on The One plan myself, But only for the past 5 or 6 months. Before that I was never charged for teathering even tho i was well aware my plan didnt include it.

Always came out of my data limit, as there are ways to run socks proxys on android there are ways of making it so they can't tell how your connecting.

I will say the plan to only include teathering on the one plan was really pushed in the last few months. Saw the site fully update with all the new plans and i'm pretty sure the all you can eat used to include it on other plans as well.

You mentioned being able to use proxies etc to get around it. Could you shed any light on that for me..? :)

I'm on 3
15£ payg

So I get the unlimited inet. I regularly top 20gb and tethering can easily be 75% of that if the pc needs an update

Android as said masks it, they can't prove that it's tethered (love android) but this is why I'm on PAYG, can't get any nasty surprises!

I can't find the page i used before, when i was toying with this stuff. Did intend to link it before, but couldnt find it. Google is failing me.

http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/ Is the best i've been able to find at the moment.

But i've seen others, and used one which looked more finished than this. But stopped having a need awhile ago.
