Apple conference....

Have to admit I always thought the tablet idea was a non starter for Apple but there seems to be so much momentum behind the idea that I am starting to think it is real. It has to be better than the tablet that Steve Ballmer and HP unveiled the other day which is basically the same old tablet idea they failed with ages ago but with multitouch.

To break a new technology you need to present the reason for the buyer to purchase it.

The problem with the HP one is that it's almost as if someone has said "here's a new 13A plug design". There's no sale message beyond the technology- what great fab things can you do if you had one..

So with the slate it'll tie in with the existing functionality but I bet there's something else in the pipeline around it..

Oh bugger! ordered a 13" Macbook Pro from ****** last night not realising new models where about to be released. Think it worth returning it under the cooling off period and waiting until the announcement?

I'm going to be getting a 13" MBP in the next few months, (still saving). What other decent graphics can they put in seeing how they nolonger favour nVidia? I don't want a Pro model with Intel graphics. :(

One thing Apple will need to address with the MBPs if they up the processors and GFX hardware will be the appalling heat dissipation of the unibody chassis.

Just spent a couple of hours in Windows world, and the forced use of the 9600 really highlights how bad the thermal design on these machines are. Of course, Apple could just release some decent Boot Camp drivers... *titter titter*

For those people expecting/wishing for laptop upgrades including Quad Core CPUs I very much doubt that this is what this event is about.

I'm going to say that the tablet (10") that will replace the bottom end MacBook (or at least compliment it). The rest of the MBP range may get a small speed bump.

I also predict a new OS for the iPhone.

I only hope that the tablet runs full OS X and not the iPhone os or I will cry and still buy one...

I don't think Macbooks or iPhones will get mentioned. I'm going to guess new iTunes (or at least updated with more to offer in the store) with the Slate PC.

Could we finally see HD movies coming to UK Apple computers rather than just the ATV?

It still bugs me that the yanks got this back when iTunes 9 launched (or was it earlier) and they still haven't introduced it to the rest of the world.

Panzer

Except most of the rumors say an announcement at the end of January but not shipping for a couple of months after that...

That seems right, I would say a late February launch but I still say a new version of iTunes will pop up at the event as they will have to have something tangible to launch for the event*

*Even if it's just a glorified "look how well we're doing".. have an iTunes/iPhone firmware update with "tablet coming soon" event.

Depends on the studios. I've got ATV, and the HD films on it, or more to the point the variety of HD films on it is rather pants. Don't even get me started on the availability of rentals. We're shafted as usual.

What do people expect to happen with the MacBook pros? I hate that mac rumours site just says don't buy! If it's a minor CPU upgrade I won't be too bothered however a significant change (i5) or gpu card and I'll be seriously gutted. Guess it will be better to just wait... Really need a laptop by feb tho :/ Arghhh!!

yea an i5 or i7 chip in a MBP would be nice (if the price is right) as am saving for a MBP this year, was going to get a 13 inch version MBP but if the new CPUs are in the 15/17 inch models then i guess i will save a bit more lol

Just had a though:

Do you think they will announce a new iLife / iWorks package or updates to the Pro Apps like Aperture.

I can see iLifeX or iWorksX on the horizon considering what they have done with Quicktime, and the fact that there was an iLife '08 and '09.

It would also make sense if they are updating iTunes for it to be iTunesX as well.

It seems January 2010 would be the ideal time to launch the above, so they can get a full year out of the name. :p
