Who’s going to be the first to complain about the chin?
TechRadar are fairly scathing of the design. I must say, I fully agree with them.
"But why does the iMac have a massive chin instead of more display real estate?"
Let's think about that for one moment as I'm sitting in front of a 27" iMac.
I have it at the correct height, my eyes are level with the top of the screen.
I don't even notice the chin. I look at the screen, not the bezel or the chin. In fact if the screen were to go down as far as the bottom of the chin, it would be uncomfortable to look that far down as I'd be noticeably tilting my head downwards.
The biggest complaint I hear about the iMac is the chin but funnily enough, it's from people who don't own one and don't sit in front of one for hours a day. It's like the notch on the iPhone, the people who make the biggest fuss about it are those who don't have one. The same goes for the Touch Bar, the most vocal complainers are those who don't actually have a laptop with a Touch Bar.
I do agree that the thickness of an all-in-one isn't especially important. My current iMac is thinner than my previous one but I don't sit here looking at the computer from the side so it's totally irrelevant really. Removing the internal power supply and providing an external one makes no odds to me, I can't see cables draped behind the computer anyway so it's solving a 'problem' that doesn't really exist.
To say it's badly designed and the part you look at is terrible just reeks of clickbait to me.
I think the new iMac looks OK, the lack of an Apple badge on the front is surprising but when I buy the larger version after it's released, I'll use one of the many Apple stickers I have to resolve that
