Hey All,

Well my sister has just bought an Apple Book Pro and I'm thinking about borking it.... I have no idea where to start with apples... even though I'm writing on it now... guide would help please :)

I used to run macSMP on my MBP, but I stopped after a while. Reasons:

it either gets mega hot or you have to run the fans at a silly speed. having had the fans turned up and running for a while (about 2 months), they are now noticeably louder even at lower rpms.

because of the way it vents air onto the rubberised strip across the bottom of the screen and the screen itself, you get a filthy black stain that's damn awkward to remove.
 
It's pretty easy on Macs really - as you've found out.

Might be worth grabbing a copy of smcFanControl if you're worried about heat (which, if you're not, you should be). :)

Yeah, Apple laptops run so hot when under load. My MacBook would generate more ppd than my iMac but I don't run it due to heat and noise issues.
 
Yeah, I wouldn't borg a new Apple laptop. I'd be OK running it if it were mine but you shouldn't subject unsuspecting friends and relatives to having their palms scorched.

Yer thought that... I didnt know that there was so much trouble with MBP running FAH

If they don't have a dedicated installer, drag them where you want them (Applications folder or somewhere under there, usually).
 
Double click the .dmg file. This will mount the image and pop up a window containing the application. Drag the application file to wherever you want - usually the Programs folder but I stick it anywhere. When you've copied the file to its location you can then eject the image by dragging the white drive image into the bin (the bin will change into an eject icon).

One thing you need to get used to in Mac OS is that the file IS the application (in 90%+ cases). You dont need to run an installer like in windows that creates a million files everywhere. When you need to "uninstall" a program you literally drag the application icon into the bin.

The only thing a program might leave on your system is a few settings files in the Library. Depends largly on the program but some leave a few fragments here and there but its not half as bad as Windows in that department.


edit - I wrote "folding" instead of "folder". I need a holiday...

aaaaah ok thats cool.... stick a PC or Linux box in front of my no problem... a Mac and I'm lost.... how embaressing!

Title of this thread sounds like someone is doing a cookery course.

Reading this thread I realise that it's the user of the computer that is going to get cooked :p
