Possible hint towards an Apple game console? I'm not convinced, but an interesting concept.

There's no way on Earth Apple are going to be able to compete with the big boys in the console market. Microsoft pretty much brute-forced their way into the market with their immense cash reserves and lucky for them it paid off.

I think any potential gaming functions would simply flesh out the AppleTV and target the casual gamer. It doesn't take powerful hardware to run games like "Scene It" or "The Sims" and with newer chips almost on the market that incorporate on-die graphics processors it certainly seems possible.

In an age of Media Centres, Sky boxes, PS3s, Xboxes all fighting for space under the TV I'm not sure we need yet another box.

Thoughts?

Maybe they are just thinking about it? Doesnt do them any harm to apply for it does it.

Even if they are thinking of bringing something out i don't think it will be any time soon.

Just a rumour, would be commercial suicide anyways.

Besides the Apple TV has barely even gotten off the ground.

They can't even put gaming-worthy graphics cards into their highest end machines - the products most native to their entire company. So I hope they don't bother with a console.

Well the iPod already contains some "games" (does this make it a handheld gaming device?) - and I suppose they might add a few similar things to the Apple TV. It might well just be a case of lawyers trying to cover themselves for minor changes rather than anything too unexpected.

Please don't. Focus on what they're doing best, not gaming... especially when I heart my 360, Apple won't be able to hold a candle in that department *looks at their gaming history*

I don't think Apple has the finance to throw good money after bad like MS and Sony in the console arena. Console arena == Billon $ loses (EG Sega getting out of hardware)

If they did, it would be a mega fail. See attached pic:

Theres no point in Apple venturing into the games market, its never been their strong point.

The thing that has always made me wonder about the Apple TV is why they dont put a DVD in it? I think if they did it would be perfect, you can watch one of your own movies and if you fancy renting one you can with the new service when its avaliable. Plus you have access to your music and YouTube.

Why DVD? why not bluray?

Whatever I dont mind really, a form of optical drive would make it very tempting. Would be a good all in one system. As it stands currently, I wouldnt touch it.

Because it'll put the pricing even more out of the market value?
Apparently Apple TV is selling near its hardware value... I can't seem to find the source now... too many things going on.

I can understand that, they cant be shifting that many, that will play a big part.

Seems the general consensus is against a game console, and I agree.

The handheld thing though... could we perhaps be seeing some games that take full advantage of the iPhone and Touch systems? Ever since I first started playing with the Touch interface I thought about the massive potential to create some very interesting games.
