My iPad 1 is fine web browsing, I don't tend to use anything other eBay, Facebook and twitter apps. iOS 5 killed the speed a bit, I'm sure apple do it on purpose. Luckily I saved the shsh blobs so can downgrade to ios4. Wouldn't get a ipad2 because that's next on the chopping list.

We have a 1 and 3 and don't have many issues at all with the games that are run on the ipad 1. Yeah the 3 is faster and has a much better screen but for browsing and educational stuff for our son it doesn't give us any grief.
People have different experiences and apps and have been complaining of crashing and problems for over a year. Kind of pathetic that a £400+ item has a useful life of less than 2 years for those people.

I have an iPad 1 and 3.
For general use I use whichever one is closest. For web browsing, movies etc its fine, and only marginally slower in real time use. The only task its noticeably poorer at (I don't really play graphic intensive games) is newsstand. I have a few magazine subscriptions and once you've browsed one with the retina screen the ipad 1 looks terrible. Strangely I don't notice it anywhere near as much when web browsing. It must handle the fonts differently.
