Apple iPhone -> Android Dev Phone

But if he thinks the Nexus 4 might be 'too large' then how is an S4 going to help here?!

I don't think it's so much of an issue now:

I haven't bought anything yet :p I was merely pointing out that my concerns about physical size have been somewhat reduced by talking to some of my friends.

I'm not saying the Nexus 4 isn't a good shout by the way, but personally I'd go for Samsung given their market share and the extra issues you might face over stock Android.

I missed that bit.

I guess, if he's aiming to just use one device - then the S4 setup to switch from the Google Edition ROM to stock might be the best solution.

I'm loathe to do anything to devices that are used for testing though, if they're not as a 'normal' user would have them - they can introduce doubt on the validity of tests.

she said she would never get on with a phone as big as my S3 but I bought her one she loves it.

See, modern cultural concerns aside, sometimes the man just does know best and we've just got a take charge do the right thing and force her hand for her own benefit, it's probably a spacial awareness thing:o

She also said she would never use a 7" tablet so I bought her a Nexus 7 and she's never off it :)

You want something smaller than an S4 so i recommend a S4 Mini yet you seem to go for a large phone with no expandable memory like the Nexus 4... Dont buy anything and stick your head in the sand.

S4 minis are complete arse, you shouldn't be recommending them for what the OP wants.

Also, you shouldn't get butthurt that your "advice" isn't taken.

Thanks for everyone's input, much appreciated guys :)

From a dev point of view, you shoud develop on the Nexus 4 and then test it on the others. We have various devices from Samsung, HTC, Motorola, ZTE (representing our min requirements and also the popular devices) for testing on. But primary dev is done on Nexus devices. With customised versions of Android you'll often hit issues where things don't work as they should. Recently had a baffling bug where the code worked fine on the N4, but not on the equiv Samsung devices.

Source; I'm an Android developer :)

In the end this is what I have decided to do, partly because this was exactly the recommendation I got from the guy I'll be working with. I have ordered a Nexus 4 as my main dev phone (and, if I get on with it, my personal one).

After some discussion with the company I'll be working for, I'll also have direct / unlimited access to the following test devices:

Samsung S3
Samsung S4
HTC Desire
Some horrendous Sony thing the boss used to use :p

...so I think I'll probably be okay. The Samsungs do seem incredibly popular so I couldn't really get away without testing on them.

Once again, cheers all :)
