Apple leaves EPEAT

Might cause an issue for schools and businesses (mostly American public sector) that require EPEAT.

Other than that it's only the hippies that will be crying into their soya over this.

Do a company have to have every product meeting their standards to comply with EPEAT?

Why can't they still sell the standard MBP etc as they are obviously fine.

Their fault for fixing the battery to the chassis with industrial strength glue. Why can't they just design a better way of attaching it?

Glueing the battery was the best way to attach it to keep the chassis as thin as possible & allow for more battery in a smaller place.

They explained that it was done because mounting any other way would require more brackets and internal construction which would take away from the thin design, cant remember where i heard this, might have been in the keynote.

Would people give up a couple of mm for something that was a lot more environmentally friendly? I would.

Most people don't care, most people won't even know what EPEAT is, the only affect this has is on government departments which need that rating. It's also hardly much more inviromentaly worse either.
These standards IMO are pretty useless and we need government intervention, so many simple things we could change. But don't. You just have too look at the world of packaging for a start.

Why don't you write and email to Apple showing how you can design a better way? I'm sure they'd be keen to hear from you.

I wouldn't. These arbitrary standards are junk anyway. Given the level of nasty stuff inside most computers it doesn't make much difference anyway.

Me either, i mean as stated above there are many things that need to be improved upon before deciding that because a battery is glued in place its not eco friendly.

Well by that logic I should stop recycling my rubbish, because there are many things that need improving and it doesn't make much difference anyway.

They're a bit deal in the public sector and corporate world as it makes the secondhand kit worth more, easier/cheaper to recycle. If the product spec says EPEAT and Apple can't meet it then they could lose the education market.

Not at all.
It's about weighing it up and a battery stuck to a board is not a massive environmental harm, especially when it looks like the rest of the computer would pass.
