Apple Lineup

Why would they produced a head less iMac? Where would it sit? In between the mac pro and mac mini?

I think maybe the odd thing is that the iMac has a head at all! Why not just make a system unit that sits between the £500 mini and £1400 pro. That's a pretty large gap.

Why would they produce two different types of 13 inch laptop?

They used to (albeit 12").

It would also demand the price premium of the Pro range so would be around £300-400 more expensive that the comparable MacBook for a slightly smaller, aluminium case and maybe a slightly faster processor. People would laugh in Apple's faces :(

The black MacBook already fills that slot in some respects - for whatever absurd reason, people seem happy to pay £950 for one just because it's black. For the money, the specs are disappointing.

I think pound per spec all models are "disappointing", much like the sound quality of an ipod compared to some of it's contemporaries. But that didn't stop me shelling out £1600 on an iMac (or buying ipods) and being staggered by how impressive it is. You don't really buy a mac to get the fastest highest spec e-peen out there. If you want on paper bang for buck and value for money buy a tacky dell :D. If you want a performant eye opening user exp buy a mac (also available in black).

I'm not necessarily comparing the black MacBook to a Dell or anything else; even compared to the white MacBooks, they're overpriced. A £950 notebook should absolutely come with 2GB of RAM, minimum. Dell are selling XPS M1330s (probably the closest PC competitor to a MacBook there is right now) for nearly half that which have 2GB. I just don't really see what excuse Apple have when they're charging much more anyway. Surely Mac users would like a bit more for their money?

True, everyone would like a bit more for their money. I guess what I am getting at is that they sell regardless and Apple quite like more for their money to. So why do Apple "need" to do anything?

Apple will charge what people will pay, they don't need an excuse. They have a demand that matches supply and a great business model.

No business is ever perfect. Are you suggesting Apple's lineup is perfect and couldn't be improved? It's not perfect for me. I spent ~£800 on a MB a year ago and nothing else. I would have spent ~£1000 for a 13 MBP and I would spend ~£7-800 on a headless iMac. Not because I want more for less - because I don't want an expensive Apple 20" TFT.

Yes, but with sales figures and market share as high as they are, they likely don't care very much about you (and me). Because in the end, I'll complain for a few months, then I'll get bored and buy a mac pro...

Exactly what big red shark just said! Their line up and models are very good, proven by the fact they are selling so well! No model is ever perfect for everyone or all individuals. But you only have to look at the sales figures to see how well they are doing. The masses are buying.

I totally agree with you, I think there should be a mid-range tower or equal to the iMac. I think it would do Apple good. :)

Well no, the masses are still buying PCs. One of the reasons for that is because there's so much more choice available.

Apple aren't a stupid company though, I'm sure they do know what they're doing. But they're the sort of company that creates a product then encourages consumer demand for it, rather than creating a product based on consumer demand. They tend not to really care what the consumers want beforehand.

I'm sorry but I think thats all wrong...

I don't believe anybody buys a PC rather than a mac because there's more choice. I believe they do it because it's cheaper, or they've always used windows and want to keep using it.

If you keep creating products based on consumer demand you never end up with something new. Apple don't encourage consumer demand, they build products which define new ways to do things. Nobody really wanted an MP3 player when apple came up with the ipod but people came round to the idea when they saw the potential. If consumer demand had shaped that we'd all still have CD players.

I think the same can be said for the apple tv, which (software upgrade or not) has a few years to go yet before it becomes mainstream, but I think it will in the end because streaming all your media from one store and renting films online is the way things should go...

I'm betting it's Windows users who'd want to see the "headless iMac" more than most.

They want OS X on custom hardware, and this would be the easiest avenue to get to it (officially).

As for iPods sounding "worse" than competitors.. get some decent headphones ;)
