That will be because you're not on a Mac and have some other character set installed.

I only discovered the Apple symbol when I ordered my Matias Tactile Pro 3 keyboard as it has secondary and tertiary legends on the keycaps. There's so many key combinations you can do, but the Apple wired/wireless and most (nearly all) third party keyboards don't have the legends on the keycaps. So if you're new to OS X you have to Google or hunt and hope.
 
It makes me think of those apple stickers you get with most Apple products, which is basically saying "Here, proliferate our corporate logo and we'll let you bask a little in the relfected glory of our brand. Go on, you know you love us." :p

There's a keyboard viewer you can switch on through system prefs, really useful for symbols you don't use often.
