Would love to hear people's views on their likes and dislikes on Apple Mac's

I was considering buying a mac mini as a side pc to connect up to my 42" LCD but then i thought , what actually do you get for your money when you consider what other companys like acer or dell actually produce a simular product with more features?

Is it the look of the machine that people like or maybe the OS ?

I was looking in a apple store today at the imac 20" for £799 and if you consider a windows based pc for the same price you can get a lot higher spec.

Am i missing something ? this isnt an attack on Apple ( I own a apple TV and an Apple Touch )

Been a thread on similar things.

The OS is 232374823 times better than Windows, and im only a fairly recently Mac user!

The style, feel and build of Macs are awesome.

The Mac Minis are smaller than most PC's, silent etc etc. Which is what i will be definitely getting.

Im using the top spec 20" iMac and i love it. Would much rather pay what i paid for this than what id get for a Windows machine. Baring in mind you can use windows on here anyway..

One thing that does annoy me about Apple though is there " Vale of Silence "
over new products.

I mean take the Mac mini , i cant believe they are being so tight lipped about if the mini is gonna get an upgrade or whether they are going to discontinue , any other company usually gives an incline on updates to their products.

Its like a big one finger salute to their customers in my opinion

The only thing that irks me is lack of top flight graphics card options. I'm after a new iMac, and I'd really like to be able to buy a 20" iMac with the 8800GS in it, but it only comes in the 24". Would be nice to be able to get a better card than the GS too, but ho hum.

Example : Some guy saves up £400 to buy a mac mini , pops into shop and picks one up , next week apple launch new model with better spec for same price without any warning.

Other company product : Guy sees on the internet that " Company " are releasing an updated product sometime in the next month. Guy makes an informed decision to wait it out and buy the upgraded version.

Guy feels happy that now has the latest product rather than feeling duped

So why cant apple give an incline to a product upgrade rather than dropping a bombshell within a week of product upgrade?

It is the overall experience you have with Apple gear that seals it for many people I think.

There is a certain mindset when it comes to PC's that specs are the be all and end all, for some people it does not matter whether they have the latest and greatest and fastest machine just that it is enjoyable and easy to use and does what they want.

IMO Apple products do this better than most others.

Im guessing the one problem with the imac is that there isnt a lot of space inside for cooling a top level graphics card , having said that there are better options on the market now that the 8800 GS which has had its day .

And with the recent update to the penryns i thought they may of added a new Graphics Card

Well no, you'd obviously know when its about to be released.

Plus, if he buys it and theres a new one, he obviously thought the spec he got was more than enough, so ..

I got my MacBook in November of last year and not long after they bumped the specs. Didn't bother me as the model I purchased was plenty good enough for what I wanted it to do. I think it is the PC Brigade (not that PC Brigade) that get upset and hang on to the idea of specs. Your average Apple user wants to get stuff done and doesn't care about the minutiae of specs.

I want a Mac Mini in the near(ish) future. Sure I'll check the rumour sites before buying but if it gets a bump afterwards then c'est la vie!

Only two things in the vast sea of goodness that is OS X annoy me, one is the way Applications don't maximize properly and the other is Finder - it is far to quirky and really needs to be made better at handling files management.

However I'll forgive these quirks for such joys as Spotlight, QuickSilver, Spaces and so on.

I keep pressing F12 for Dashboard and CTRL-Q (can't press the Apple key!)to quit apps when on my Windows machine because I use OS X so much!

If it's under two weeks they'll swap it out for the new one with no questions asked. Probably longer than two weeks if you had a really good moan at them.

I love my Macbook but I still go back to my old XP laptop from time to time because I'm so used to using windows and I use XP at work. I would use XP on my Macbook but I was tight on money when ordering so I skimped on the HDD and regret it nearly everyday as I have used most of the disk and now use flash drives and external storage, no room for XP.

OSX is cool though but no one I know uses it.

Only dislike I have still is that finder can be a bit naff sometimes, Windows Explorer still does a couple of things better.

You can swap out the hard drive on the normal Macbook yourself without hurting your warranty, you can get 250gb drives for them for less than £70, do it :)

Well I am a new switcher too. Bought a 20" Imac for the GF, and loved it so much I had to buy one myself (so I bought a black macbook a few weeks ago).

What I like?

The OS and iLife - Well, so far, the way it is so much better integrated (software wise) than what you get with a windows machine (imho). It enables you to do some cool stuff out of the box which on Windows you can probably do, but it is usually a case of searching for the best bit of software to do the job, checking compatability, bug fixing why x or y doesn't work properly etc.

I also like those, little moments when you try to do some the PC way (i.e. try to export this, and import that) only to find that all you had to do was drag and drop!

Its hard to say overall, it is just a very good overall experience. The iMac is a stunning piece of kit in my view, the macbook is OK but really no better hardware wise (and in fact I would say not as good as) than many PC laptops.

Can't comment on the mini as I have never owned one fella.

What I DONT like so far.

I am having a task getting used to Mac shortcuts, no proper windows maximise option. and err...that's it so far. Oh and no integrated memory card reader (which you seem to get on most laptops these days).

Sorry for the ramble, hope you can make sense of it all, and hope it is of some use for the OP.
