Okies, so I ordered an 13" MB 'Pro' refurb jobbie from Apple @ £730 today.

Never used a mac before but have always wanted to try OSX because Windows is just becoming too bloated etc. You know the story. At least I can ditch bloated Windows iTunes now.

Are there any decent resources sites, or techy sites for a Windows user? Not sure where to begin looking.

I just got a 2.93 Ghz imac this morning so i am in the exact same boat, never own a mac before !!!

I only had a play this morning while it updated about 600mb+ of stuff (13 updates) before i had to leave for work, things i have noticed so far.

1 - It was a breeze to set up to go online, when loading up, put in WPA code, and add MAC addy in the router and i was online.

2 - .dmg files are like ZIP files, and to install, just drag the file into the APPLICATION folder

3 - Download PERIAN to play video files, its a codec

4 - Turn on right click in system preferences.

oh, and the screen is AMAZING !

Did you get a refurb too Mr.Lin? Mines arriving between the 4th and 6th this week and I am a bit nervous about the quality of the unit, especially after reading the macrumours forum.

I believe all macbook refurbs get a new outer body/case so you shouldnt even be able to tell it is a refurb, at least from what others have received on here. ;)

Enjoy your Macbook.

:D

I got a new unit with 3 year Applecare :) which comes in a separate jiffy bag envelope rather than in the box lol

I cannot fault the quality of the unit, i can't see any manufacturer produce something on par with Apple, it is just a pleasure to even touch. That hinge the iMac sits on, it is so smooth yet sturdy, you can tilt the screen with 1 single finger and the unit remains stable AND it'll stay in place when you stop moving.

I just got a refurb MBP this morning and its superb. I have installed all the usual stuff like MSN, Skype, Spotify and Firefox. Just trying to get used to the keyboard short cuts.

Oh and mine looks brand new with absolutely nothing wrong with it :)

can't fault Apple's fantastic build quality, had my MBP 13.3" for almost a week and i am still in awe of it, i'm no apple fanboy but it is one nice piece of kit.

There's heaps of tutorials on the Apple site if you get stuck with anything. Or of course you can just ask here for any specific issues. :)

By the way if you plan on downloading compressed files and you need a program to open them then I'd suggest unrarX. It's a free download and it works perfectly, also you can find lots of information on useful programs in this thread here and also any other information that you might need can probably be found here.

You'll be a fanboy soon, didn't take me long to be one :)

I know the OP was asking for general tips, but I would like to mention skitch, it's a great bit of software, find it at skitch.com for free.

Well mine arrived today. Pics

No build issues and the whole thing looks lovely. My only gripe is wtf is the # hash key?! lol
I've been mostly getting to grips with everything, especially the trackpad as itis the size of a bungalow - something I am not used to given that my two jealous Samsung NC10's have very small trackpads.

Here is the best bit. I paid £730 for a 2GB, 160GB HD unit, but I got a 4GB unit with a 250 Tosh hard drive. I was quite pleased.

I am not sure just yet how to connect to my Windows 7 network though, so I can access my drives on that.

Seems like it yep. From what I can see, the two bits of hardware I mentioned above are the only difference.

I've read people say they've received unexpectedly higher specs before. The "refurb" products seem like a winner.

Looking at the pics (ports & locations, and the screen), you've got a Unibody Macbook, not a Macbook Pro.

Still for £730 I wouldn't say no! :)
