Apple Map Woes

Didn't google maps cause someone to drive off a cliff? Or was that tom tom. Doesn't really matter. You shouldn't blindly trust any map. Do proper research.

That's true before the rise of Google Maps, when TomTom was king of GPS, Navteq were considered the best mapping engine. Shame TomTom decided to buy Tele Atlas instead and embed that in their devices.

Is it possible to install a Google maps app on the iPhone when on iOS6?

It's the only reason I haven't upgraded!

I gave in and installed it (iOS6) on my iPhone over the weekend (which recently became my old phone)

It really is terrible, and what worries me is that I'm using quite a few weeks post launch (it was supposed to have improved significantly in the meantime)

I thought that the issue was with the maps rather than the directions?

I thought that it had got all the place names wrong and the search is a bit screwy. I didn't think there was any issues when you used the tomtom based directions.

Nope, lack of intelligence caused a driver to drive off a cliff.

What's happening in Oz, is people are following the directions intelligently, not driving into rivers, off cliffs etc, and ending up in a desert, lost, but still on a road.

Better yet, Apple pulled other GPS software from the app store so you cant check them. Even if you have an actual physical map, your lost in a desert, good luck finding yourself on it!

There's also Here Maps from Nokia that also allows you to save maps for offline use.

Apple Maps is really beyond a joke. This is what Leeds Millennium Square (the name gives you a small indication when it was built ;) ) looks like:

This is what Apple Maps thinks it looks like:

So in summary someone at Apple thought it was okay to use satellite imagery that predates the original iPod

They did? My version of the App Store says different, I downloaded Nokia maps not the other day and have been using CoPilot for years. Apple were actively promoting other mapping solutions at one point.

Anyway, seems like the root of the problems was actually the Australian governments database, which (sensibly?!) Apple used.

The Imagery and POI data may be a joke, but the road data is actually very good.

Using postcodes to drive to a location Apple Maps has never seen me wrong, and the experience (and voice!) is far nicer than co-pilot.

Yea I admit it, I am wrong. First time for everything I guess! Was just Google they pulled?

It't not just Australia though. Apple's maps are wrong all over the show. Google can get t right, Nokia can get it right, even Bing.
