Apple removes end to end encryption (ADP) in the UK

I didn’t have it enabled either and didn’t think anything of it however one thing that concerned me in the BBC report was that all my current iCloud data is easily readable, something I wasn’t aware of. I thought data stored on iCloud was encrypted so that it could only be read by the user ala ADP. Either the BBC report is wrong or I’m going to have to look into encrypting data before storing it on iCloud.

Shouldn't be too hard GnuPG works well and works on multiple platforms.

If you want a mac GUI you can use this: https://gpgtools.org/

This is incredibly stupid, but Apple did the best thing they could have done in this situation, but I'm not sure if it's enough to stop the government from taking further action, Apple is still providing this service for users globally outside of the UK.

Fortunately, for me, it doesn't really change anything, I have basically all the iCloud stuff disabled, and things like iMessage, FaceTime, password management, and health data are already encrypted even without ADP, unless you have iCloud Backup enabled, then iMessage isn't end to end encrypted anymore, from what I can understand.

does this mean my macbook pro can be forceable cracked if they want to? not that I have anything I am worried about, I just hate that they can do this. If so are there any other ways to encrypt it?

Heres the thing though, in the UK you can be ordered by the court to unlock your devices and failure to do so can lead to immediate prison time.

The only difference this change makes is they can snoop on your stuff without you knowing about it now.

If it is already encrypted you should be fine. The article just talks about iCloud being end to end encrypted using ADP.

You can have hidden encrypted partitions that give you plausable deniability if you really want to be secure.

This is disgusting - the gov need to stop being idiots - what a time to be alive, ultra far right hyper dystopian hell prior to WW3 we are living in apparently !!!

We need to stop pandering to the idiots & do what is sane again.

Whats androids or another platforms stance on this?

While like many, I have nothing to hide - 'having nothing to hide' is the most dumbest, stupid, idiotic comment one can make, and is the kind of attitude that makes it easy for bad actors in gov to take over - saying you have nothing to hide with regards to privacy is like saying you have nothing to say in regards to free speech - a society must be built on principles, which we are all rapidly losing to the state.

I have it enabled and in settings it says it's not available for new users, it's still turned on for me.

I'm not an Apple user, can you just use a VPN to get around this? Or is it based on account settings or something?
