Right, I will get straight to the point if Apple are replacing my iPhone 4 for a new iPhone what are the chances of getting it replaced with an iPhone 4S next week? Instead of just another iPhone 4.

Took my phone in as I had a dodgy home button, that had a mind of its own some of the time. It was taken away to the workshop at the back, opened up and home button insides cleaned (was told there was a bit of lint in there).

Tried phone - home button now completley dead. Told dont worry, go home and back up your phone, come back and Apple will replace it. So I left the store. Also notice my iPhone case specially ordered from Japan is also cracked at the bottom port :(.

On the way home tried to make a call, only to find that the microphone on the iphone os also dead - nobody can hear me.

Get home with 10% battery left, so plug it in to charge - nothing happens. Plug into computer to charge/sync - nothing. Port at the bottom is completley dead. Desperately try to back up photos (+2000) etc, but fail before wi-fi drains battery and now iPhone is as dead as a door nail.

Anyway left dead iPhone 4 with wife - to take back to the store today, and they have supposedly breathed enough life back into it to enable me to sync it, but apparently the back light (screen?) is not working properly.

So after all this inconvienece - back to my original question what are the chances of getting my iPhone 4 replaced with a 4S from Friday onwards?

Looking about online:

iPhone 4 16Gb = £510
iPhone 4S 16GB = £499

So I would be saving Apple £11 :p

*EDIT* I did ask if it would be replaced with a refurb or band new, and was told brand new.

Meh... worth a shot me thinks.

Could I not offer to pay the difference if any? Is there no trade in deal in the UK like there is in the USA?

Maybe if you kick up enough fuss? :p
When i was having a hell of a time getting my iMac warranty repaired, which in the end took like 6 weeks, all i managed to get out of Apple for the trouble was a £15 iTunes card.

If they have refurbs in stock then they'll give you one of those instead. I'd imagine most stores will have plenty of 4's in the back and will continue to do so for quite a while yet.

You won't get a 4S as they are due to sell out... At best you'll get is a replacement 4 and maybe some accessories.

The lack of backup problem is your fault as they state very firmly when you go for an Apple appointment to backup all your data.

Yep, no chance of getting a 4s. Wishful thinking.

You'll get either a refurb or brand new 4- you won't be able to tell the difference because they're all in unbranded boxes out back and you just walk away with a phone, nothing else.

Yeah, you've also got to remember they will have limited stock set aside for iPhone 4s that go wrong or have issues. Those need to be in place for people who have bought new iPhone 4s that go wrong, so they aren't just going to give them away to people with iPhone 4 faults.

People have been trying this since the 3G came out after the 2G, then the 3GS. I've never heard of anyone getting anything but their orignal model back.

Except the one guy on these forums who claimed that he got a 3GS instead of a 3G and then later claimed he was given a 4 as a replacement for a 3GS but sadly had no evidence that this had happened and was politely shunned.

might be the wrong thread to ask this given your experience but how much do Apple charge to fix dodgy home buttons? Mine's playing up something rotten and I can only think there's some dirt or something in there.

Depends, might do it for free or charge anything up to £169.

Only way is to go in and ask.

Ok so my iPhone has just went out of warranty, and my home buttons sometimes does not respond. I will be pretty annoyed if i have to pay anything as it is in immaculate condition.

I doubt you'll have to pay anything. In my own experience Apples CS has been nothing short of outstanding.

I have even known them to replace a relatives phone after she dropped it in the toilet!! She just walked in, told them what happened and they replaced it on the spot as a gesture of goodwill. Yes it was under warranty, but they could easily have refused it.

Don't ask = don't get, but you must remain polite at all times :)
