Apple to host a Special Event in UK 18th Sept

I still can't quite believe that O2 will get the contract - I would've thought Vodafone would be the natural choice (bigger 3G network, etc)

The Mrs contact is coming to an end soon and I just bought her a prada phone so I think I'll be getting an iPhone from her :D

^^^Which imo makes it a waste of time...how can you have a phone that doesnt have at least 3G on it...id definitely get one if it did have 3g on it as i need the quickness of the 3g network for my internet browsing. Not so concerned about video calling as that a gimmick in itself and is a waste of money tbh

Yes, a phone costing that much should have hsdpa and hsupa, nevermind 3g, and edge should be shunned back into the dark ages where it belongs, along with gprs. The iphone doesn't even have proper bluetooth either.

Such simple additions could have been to make it so much more appealing, and maybe even worth the price, but alas it's gone the same way as the ps3. Not that you could have done much browsing on O2's £3 per MB rip off anyway.

Good god. I just noticed that with the contract the iphone is $1840 dollars!

I was going to run out and get an iPhone but I've just ordered an iPod Touch. That will satisfy the gadget thirst until the iPhone 2.0 rolls around. :)

This first generation iPhone needs some kinks worked out of it.

That's what I'm thinking myself...

Since I've got another 15 months to go on with my Student contract (W880i), I don't see how the iPhone will be any better at phoning.

The iPod Touch however, will be a great gadget - shame it doesn't have that *big* a storage, I can still have enough to listen with the amount of battery specified.

Plus, last thing I want is to run out of battery whilst listening to my music and also loose the ability to phone.

I'm not the sort of person who carries his entire collection around with him so the 8GB iPod Touch is perfect for me. I don't think I even filled my 2GB nano (which is now AWOL, hence new iPod). The wifi/Safari stuff is a bonus in my eyes. I hope they don't cripple the Calendar app like they're rumoured to have done.

Good point about running the battery down, I didnt consider that. I also read somewhere the iPhone doesnt handle SMS messages very well, which is a bummer. Although I'm sure a software update would improve that.

Indeed the Wifi/Safari/YouTube will be a bonus - especially when I'm in university and there's WiFi almost everywhere on campus - a sneak YouTube browsing between lectures will be nice :P

I haven't heard anything about the cripled Calendar, what's wrong with it?
I rely on Calendar for my timetabling, schedulings and I sync with my w880i, when I get the Touch, would be nice to just use it for my timetabling...

The pricing of 8GB is alright for my pockets (as I've sold my 2nd Gen 8GB nano), so it'll be like a same storage replacement (apparently it'll only be 6.5GB to 7GB for the 8GB Touch, due to the OS running on it)

I'm just wondering which company has been confirmed to the iPhone contract? O2?
What about the rumours of 3G? I would have thought Three will be fighting for it if it were 3G...

Apparently, you can't add events to the Calendar on the iPod touch. I assume you can only edit your calendar in something like iCal and then sync it with your iPod. That, and the absence of a Notes app, is pretty annoying because the OS is there. I suppose they're trying to club all the PDA features with the iPhone and keep the iPod touch as an MP3 player. Although by that logic, the inclusion of Safari is a bit odd. It would be a little frustrating for students - I know I would have loved something like that to mark down deadline dates etc rather than having loads of scraps of paper.

The situation might change by the time it is released, and I'm sure there will be hacks available before long.

AFAIK no company has officially been confirmed as having won the contract, but it seems to be an open secret that O2 have got it.

Hmm... interesting, I didn't realise iPhone had a Notes app... and the whole iCal on the touch not able to be edited/added on-the-go is a bad move for consumers...

I was just thinking, if the iPhone have many apps and widgets, would the touch have it too?

Officially, unless Apple have a change of heart, no. However the hacking community will be all over it so I wouldnt expect to wait long for them to appear on the Touch.

Hot diggity damn, it has to be the European iPhone launch :D

Here's hoping they finally roll out a meaty 16GB rendition!

Oh well.. 4 days to go.. we'll soon find out.
