Apple to host a Special Event in UK 18th Sept

Update: A source has mailed me to say that the operator announcements (already not exactly secret) aren't likely to happen on Tuesday. "There may well be an Apple thing next Tuesday but that is to announce its Euro stuff... The UK operator is slated to be announced on the 24th". That might indicate that we're just going to get some sort of launch date confirmed.

This is what i'm thinking.. they'll announce, but ship later.

Mum's the word

Meaning

Keep quiet - say nothing.

Origin

Mum; not mother but 'mmmmm', the humming sound made with a closed mouth. Used by Shakespeare in Henry VI, Part 2:

"Seal up your lips and give no words but mum."

According to new rumors the iPhone will be announced at the event, but won't ship until October/November :(

To make matters worse sources are claiming that Apple might start shipping the iPhone2 (one with 3G) as early as January/February 2008.

If that's the case then I won't be buying in to a 2 year contract unless they offer me a VERY heavily discounted update to the iPhone 3G (should it come out), being it would only be 3 months old.

Sounds like a catch 22 for apple. They either launch a 3g version with 16gb and annoy American consumers who'll be stuck with an inferior product, or launch the current model into a european market where 3g is a much more widely used technology, and possibly struggle to compete with competiting devices that offer 3g.

If i had to choose between an edge iphone or a 3g smartphone from another manufacturer I'd choose the latter. I've just grown too used to 3g speeds to go back to edge which I wasn't very impressed with when I used it in america.

Americanmobile contracts are generally rubbish - so we should get a better deal than they're getting. At the same time PAYG seems very unlikely to me.

Are they going to keep up with the ludicrous "pay for ringtones" idea? I've been able to have free ringtones since my Nokia 3310 back in 2001, I don't see what makes Apple think they can start charging for every little feature these days (the wireless-N thing comes to mind).

Not trying to defend them or anything but they hold contracts with big Music companies and they don't like things "shared freely" - MPAA equivilent of music industry tries to shut down lyrics, guitar tab sites because of "illegal" sharing. Basically not paying royalties...

In order to get around it and add such a feature, they have to charge - but many in the hacker communities (even freewares) have released plugins for free ringtones.

The way comanpies like Sony Ericssons, Nokia e.t.c. word their terms of use carefully so if you're using an "illegally aquired" music and use it as your ringtone, you're offending copyrights laws (and not them), but you don't get the FBI knocking on your door because it's not within context.

Apple had to charge because of its ties with big music companies and they don't want them to lose confidence (in their pockets).

At least, that's how I've perceived it but I may be completely wrong.

Meh, last I looked you could get them for free with a little effort, even after they updated iTunes and changed the file extension of them from .m4r.

They'll soon learn people don't want to pay for ringtones on TOP of the song price.

So long as there's an easy way to get them on the phone FOR FREE then they're just fighting a losing battle

Here's why they had to charge: http://www.ipodobserver.com/story/32996
