Apple TV 4k Vs Chromecast with Google TV

ITunes is Apple users exclusively . If your a Apple user then go for it.
Sales figures show that for every 1 apple device sold 4 Android devices are (in general). Most people use Android because its typically a lot cheaper (not necessarily better) and offers a vastly wider choice.

I've owned all streaming devices. The Apple 4k tv doesn't get used because I sold it because the remote is hideous to use. Also I hate anything related to iTunes or Apples app store mainly because prices are cheaper elsewhere. I'm not tight, far from it but I prefer not to use Apple over other products which offer me more and cost less.

Buy both and see what you prefer. Only way you'll know which you'll like better.
I don't like everything equally unfortunately.

Lol.

Yes you need to set up an Apple ID to use the iTunes Store but no more different to me setting up an email and then loading my details into the Play Store. Where can I buy Google content on an Apple TV as an example? Every platform has an element of exclusivity to it.

The iTunes Store has weekly sales for its content including HD films that get free 4K upgrades.

But going from your responses it’s clear you don’t like Apple or their services. Hate is a strong word to use in this scenario IMO. But each to their own I guess.

We can go tit for tat all day about what device is better-if you have a certain preference to a device then naturally you’re going to lean towards that.

Sure if you’re heavily into one ecosystem then you might prefer going one specific way which is totally fine.

But as I said, I know of many people where the ATV is their only Apple device yet use Android everything else because of the quality/value it provides content wise.

I’ve had the Shield TV twice now and they’ve either been sold on or gone back because the apps either aren’t on the Android TV platform yet (All 4/Now TV) or they aren’t up to the same standard of the tvOS ones. You can cast those apps, sure. But most people don’t want to do that.

And as we’ve got a second ATV on the way, we’ve gotten enough value from the first one that getting a second one now is a no brainer.

Sure cost is one thing to weigh up, but it’s only one element and the OP asked if the ATV is worth the extra over the new Chromecast and I believe it is.

Isn't the ai upscaling on the shield the best

Oh I agree that I'm not a fan of apple and thier products. I'm VERY harsh about Apples services and more so with the products.
Again the abilities offered from most Android based devices suits my needs far far greater than Apples. I also have a more unique criteria thdn most so again I'm way more fussy about how I want a product to perform for me.
Essentially with music I have my own large library (various formats and stored locally on each device I intend to listen too) and don't use any streaming music services period as they offer not everything I need (different mixes etc)
Movies & TV I use plex mainly (again my own library) but Have your main streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Prime)
Tbh as long a a streaming TV box offers me the apps and services in one box then I'm more than OK with that. The devices remote is key as to whether I'll use or like a device.
I use mainly the Nvidia Shield & my 4k Roku. Shield benefits me in it has a gigabit Lan so it's best for the big 4kHDR stuff. Streaming even on 5ghz typically handles these fine so it's not essential but nice.
New Chromecast is OK but again if offers me nothing my other devices don't. I'm lucky I have access to many if not all. Not one unfortunately is perfect and I'm always looking for "the best"

no, software upscaling nothing very impressive, algorithm wise, marketting hype

Looked up shield pro AI scaling ... just edge enhancement afaiks, so, your tv may do better.

sharp xd lcd tv I used to have, had this split screen demo mode too, to try and show off video processing.

I own a Shield TV 2017 and have played with Apple TV (not owned) and like all things Apple (after giving it a fair try) I did not like it.

I know people have opinions but for me the Shield TV is still the best and if buying today it would be the new Shield Pro with AI Upscaling, better Dolby HDR/Audio etc etc and I know most if not all reviews will tell you this.

This seems to have swayed into a ATV vs Shield TV again (as these conversations tend to do) unfortunately.

Going back to the original question, the Apple TV delivers fantastic performance, an easy to navigate UI, has all the UK apps and a store full of 4K Dolby Vision/Atmos content and I believe it’s worth the extra outlay over the new Chromecast.

I did not realise it had wandered from the two devices in title, just seen talk from Shield naysayers. :p

FYI I have read many people going back to the Chromecast Gen 3 after buying the new Goggle TV model and then returning it (Chromecast reddit for one source).

if you were going to fork out £150 for an atv, and don't really want Apple tv/itunes itself, it is the same price as a shield ? which can also be used as a media server too,
The itunes 4k film catalogue at ~100 films, seems limited anyway.

Also, if you don't need itunes access, the roku ss+ (I have) seems better value than new chromecast,
if your tv has dynamic hdr ability then the hdr10+ capability of the roku can match dolby vision, and there are very few(any yet?) films mastered at greater than 4k nits hdr10 can support.
