So after 18 months of fighting with my Windows Media Centre I finally sold it. With the proceeds I was going to put it towards a New Mac Mini and run Plex, but felt that:
1. The new prices are high
2. Wife acceptance factor would be low

So after much debate I bought myself an 40Gb Apple TV of that well known auction site for £130 BNIB.

Just to explain I run an old 450 G4 with a SATA card and a couple of 350gb HDs as my media server, I have a 2.2ghz MBP an airport express which I use for AirTunes and a 3G iphone as well as a couple of other laptops.

After hooking my new ATV up to my plasma, running an toslink cable to my AV amp and hardwiring it to my GBit Network (the house is cat 5 cabled as I am not a huge wireless fan) I turned it on.
Well all I can say is that it is a Ronseal Product - it does what it says on the tin. I synched it with my music and library and set my video library to streaming and let it do its updates and synch. 20 minutes later job done. My music library is all there, movies (ripped with handbrake) stream flawlessly, Youtube, Itunes store all work.

The wife loves it - easy to use, no huge WMC box with fans running, I can use it as an Airtunes device with my Itunes - so I dont need my TV on, I can use my Airport express in the conservatory as an Airtunes device - overall very happy with the convergence.

I am also running 360Connect to my XBox and can also see all my media on my G4 on that too (interface isnt as nice and fans would be an issue, but its wired in the back of a wardrobe). Which I use in the morning to listen to music whilst getting ready for work.

My next thing to do is install Boxee, XBMC and Couch Surfer on my ATV, then I think I might buy another ATV for the LCD in the kitchen.

I guess if you are an AV Nazi the ATV's 720i max output maybe a major shortcomming but I figure as 90% of Sky TVs HD service is shot in 720p and so many people rave about how good it is, it will be good enough for me until ATV gets a refresh to 1080.

Quick question for those with apple TV's - can you use the remote application on the iphone to control it? If you can then I'll buy one tomorrow but if not it begs the question why not...

Yup, not sure for hacked applications! I'll try and test that this weekend.

You can definitely use it to control it as an Airtunes speaker and according to http://www.apple.com/itunes/remote/

Controls Apple TV.
Remote lets you control the music on your Apple TV from anywhere in your home. Pause a song from the bedroom. Resume play from the kitchen. And enjoy total remote control.

Controls AirTunes.
There’s no better complement to AirTunes than Remote. You can see all your AirPort Express and Apple TV AirTunes speakers on your iPod touch or iPhone. Turn all of them on or turn a few of them off, and rock the house.

Will try this tonight when I get in. I know I use my iphone to control airtunes in my conservatory.

I ordered one, but canned the order as I didn't fancy streaming videos on Wi-Fi.

Good product if you're cabled though

What settings do you use Feek?

I've got some movies and tv shows in the Apple Universal format [via Handbrake] but they seem a bit jerky, like it's dropping frames or something. I'm wired up with Ethernet.

Hope I'm not crapping on your thread Simon. :)

Cheers for the link AmTech. :)

Unfortunately I've just realised that I've bought the wrong machine. The same videos that are a bit crummy in quality on the Apple TV, are perfectly fine when running in Front Row on my Mac Pro (DVI -> HDMI).

I know the Mac Pro has a fair bit more power than the Mac Mini but I think the Mini will be able to handle things better than ATV. Gutted!

Slogan out of curiosity what format and settings are your movies ripped in ?
The reason I ask is you may find that if you patchstick hack your ATV with say XBMC they may run fine as XBMC adds quite a few codecs and allows greater compatibility

My stuff is all encoded in Apple Universal. Basically works on iPod, iPhone and Apple TV.

I didn't do all of my collection because I knew I could have been changing things, but I tested it out on my 2707wfp in full screen (1920 x 1200) and it wasn't too bad at all.

The same stuff synced or streamed with my Apple TV is pixel-y/blocky and it's skipping frames. And that's only on a 720p set (Sony Bravia 32").

I can only think that there's some sort of odd compression going on because the quality of the video [on file], is as good as DVD quality. Either that or the Apple TV hasn't got the grunt to deliver at the quality it's at.

I'm hoping a Mac Mini will solve my problems. It's a bit more than I'd want to spend [about £300+ more...] but I'm very particular about getting this HTPC stuff right if it's to be done at all, so far I've failed in that task.

I'm sure I could sit and spend ages optimizing for Apple TV but I'm really liking the quality that I have at the moment and it looks good on TV (via Mac Pro), on my iPhone and in a small window on the computer.

Cheers for the advice on the XBMC but given how Apple operate, I'd rather not get involved.

Will probably go to the Apple Store tomorrow and get a Mini - hopefully they'll have one with 2 or 4gb of RAM.

Been tempted to buy one of these for ages - specially as I do get hooked on renting the movies from the iTMS - keep me going on the night shifts, would like that functionality when I sit on my sofa - "What movie tonight....*scroll scroll click watch*

Slogan,

let me know how the mac mini works out for you, I will be interested. I am running plex on my mbp at the moment and although the interface looks nice I dont think that I could give it to the wife to use - which is a critical factor for me WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) has become my number one priororty - having being through Kiss Players and WMC etc.

I am on a steeping learning curve with my ATV, but I know the interface is family friendly, so I will work around other issues to make it work
