Apple TV

I do find the bastardisation of the English language by American-isms such as "awesome" about as appealing as a finger nail being scraped down a blackboard.

Good, excellent etc. will suffice.

Riiight.

Anyway, back on topic, I have been a bit disappointed with AirPlay - specifically the fact you can't stream the video (only audio) from iPlayer.

How about if I say it is a jolly good show, old bean? :p

Awesome is a fine word.

Yeah that's a pain in the backside. Hopefully when (if) iOS apps come to the ATV we can simply put iPlayer straight on it.

Should I say that would be awesome? :D

With all this talk of Apple TV of excellence I couldn't resist any longer I have just bought an Apple TV to replace the airport express in my lounge currently being used to airplay to my AV receiver.

Once that is setup I will mainly use it for Airplay and Picture libraries. I will keep my W7 HTPC for TV playback and recording and movies however.

:)

New Apple TV isn't bit-perfect if you didn't know already, unlike the AirPort Express. It does a Windows and resamples everything, not quite sure why as Apple's always been superb with regards to not tampering with bit-for-bit audio. Whether or not you have the gear to be able to hear the difference though...

That I didn't know.... so just to clarify the ATV doesn't pass the bitstream straight from the audio files out through the optical port for the DAC built into the AV receiver to deal with?

I have a Denon AV Reciever coupled with Mordaunt Short speakers, not exactly hifi but certainly midrange AV. Depending on how bad it is I may be able to tell the difference, I will have an experiment when it arrives.

Yep, I know, it's a bugger isn't it. I was planning to do the same thing as you, but then found out about that. Irrelevant for me in the end since I decided as I'm at the desk the most out of anywhere I'd just have the w@nky audiophile set up here with some active monitors and a decent DAC and will leave the surround speakers and receiver (when I get them) just for blu ray player/set top box/apple tv. So much for an 'all in one'!

I do find it sad and frustrating that despite all the advances in technology there still doesn't appear to be one perfect streaming solution out there. Why is that?

I agree very frustrating indeed.

I may be able to live with the compromise on the ATV as it is running through and AV system, which is a compromise for music anyway.

I still have a HiFi setup consisting of a Musical Fidelity X-A1, X-24 DAC and X-PSU connected via optical to an Airport-X in my conservatory which I am very pleased with.

Tempted to order an Apple TV from Apple US and put my Bundlebox forwarding address to good use.

Works out at $116.59, so that's ~£75.

Well, there's nothing wrong with using the AE like you were already, the Apple TV still works as far as streaming video and other content, just leave the music to what you have. You can still control it via the Remote app AFAIK, if you have an iOS device, and using the Apple TV remote would probably be a bit cumbersome anyway.

Rep for that EVH, that's class! There's not as much I'd grab from the States these days due to the exchange rate not being as good as it was and getting hit with import fees but I'll be bookmarking that.

I had notification of shipment from Apple yesterday so hopefully it will arrive next week. I will have a play around with it and report back.

I was thinking of running both the AE and the ATV and just choosing to airplay music to the AE and airplay video to the ATV and then I remembered that I do not have a spare optical input on my AV Receiver. I could output from the AE in Analogue but from what I remember reading the DAC built into the AE wasn't that great.

The splitter is a really good shout, however I am having difficulty finding one that will switch between 2 inputs automatically.

I was also thinking of perhaps getting an optical to coaxial convertor or possibly buying a cheap offboard HiFi DAC.

.... all depending of course if the Resampling on the ATV is noticeably worse than the AE when played through my AV system.

Amazon currently selling this for £89.80 but dispatching in 1-2months.

Had a gift voucher on my account for £45 from christmas so figured for £40 it's worth waiting a month or so for it :)
