Apple tv

Von Luck wrote....... ? You can stream audio or video from itunes via the ATV2 already, that's out of the box functionality.

Yes you can but what you can't do is "mirroring" as you need full AirPlay functionality for that which is currently only on iOS devices. For viewing other content from your Mac not within iTunes you either have to JB ATV or use an App such as Air Video but again with that you need an iOS device as well.

From the looks of it you can do it fairly easily if you check out AppleTVhacks.net The new version of the software for the ATV2 (4.4) doesn't support XBMC yet apparently so you will need to check what version it is on..though this will change in time I'm sure.

With a jailbroken ATV 2 you can use it to subscribe to Netflix, works a bit like spotify in that you pay a monthly fee and can stream anything in their library without any extra cost

Can't make out if worth getting. Can some of u look to see if it easy see what films got close captions on rental films. Also any screenshots of what it looks like

sorry for the potential hijack, but is there any way to put a DVD in another mac / external drive plugged into the atv2 to do playback on the box?

I've gone through the process tonight and it went well.
I now have XBMC running and it's sweet. My ATV2 is now a fully functional media player now :)

Super sweet.

How are you finding the performance of XBMC? Apparently the initial releases were a bit slow, wondering if they've sorted that out...

I plan to use XBMC for all media duties reading from an SMB share on a time capsule to do away with the need to have iTunes on a Mac running for music/video streaming. Don't suppose you're doing this are you?

Cheers

It works great, no stuttering or sound syncing issues - it's just like you're watching it from a DVD or Bluray source.
I have it running through a Windows7 PC with wireless setup.

I'll probably get a NAS to save having the desktop running all the time.

Awesome, I'll post my findings once I get it all set up. I think it'll all be OK, looking forward to having the best of both worlds.

iOS for all the iTunes/Airplay integration, and XBMC for the media freedom. :)

That is exactly where I was as well. I wanted a media player streaming device but also liked the Airplay mirroring functionality and didn't want to shell out for for two player devices.
It's annoying that ATV2 out of the box only streams movies through iTunes (MP4 etc) so having the JB XBMC option makes it the perfect device for iPhone and iPad owners.

Another ATV2 convert. I have a NAS box which i store all my MKV movies which stream perfectly over XMBC/ATV2.

Icefilms is really good too, for streaming movies that are held online.
