Apple users, do you take a dim view of their litigation 'tactics'?

The battle is never over, I'm still gob smacked that people think apple are doing something new or to a new level. They aren't. It's standard practice as usuall. Just look into MS past, especially when UI where taking off in a big way. Or any point where technology has exponentially grown. Go look at the medicine sector and the cases they have.

I'd guess that the amount of people who would buy an iPhone (for example) but don't due to the litigation situation is astronomically small. If it even exists.

So Robbo - do I not exist, or am I just astronomically small? (Don't answer that. :p)

I've just shelved my plan to give in and buy an iPad following Apple getting an injunction against sales of the Galaxy Nexus in the US until the judgement is handed down in two years. We all know how fast phone tech moves - in two years the Nexus will be outclassed by everything on the market. In other words, Apple have in essence managed to get an outright ban on the chief rival to the iPhone without having to definitively prove any of their infringement claims in a court of law. For a cost of $96m, they've swung perhaps $300m in business away from Samsung and into their coffers.

Not $96m at all.
That is but a security amount.
If apple lose they have to pay full damages.

It's also not years, they're just going to update the software. Isn't this the one where they're just going to pre-install jelly bean on it and thus negate the issue.

Except its not indefinitely, Samsung have a chance in weeks to present their Appeal or show how the device no longer infringes on the patent.

Your dislike of Apple is very well documented. ;)

Patent system encourages this kind of abuse. Apple are ultimately faced with some very strong competition for market share and will exploit the current system as much as they can to undermine competitors. Even if imo it is "playing dirty".

South Korea's Samsung Electronics said Friday it expects a record operating profit of 6.7 trillion won ($5.9 billion) in the second quarter, amid strong sales of its mobile devices.
A 79% rise compared to last year. No doubt thanks to Apple and Google.

I'm actually surprised (or disappointed) that Apple's corporate behaviour doesn't deter more people from buying their products. Then again, this shows just what a strong position they have with consumers.

How a company behaves doesn't really have any baring on how good their products are.

As I've said many times, if you have such an attitude, there's few big companies you should buy from. Apple isn't special, they are all at it. It's just apple is
A) big
B) in the medias attention
C) holds the important patents ATM

Now go look at all the other big companies and how many patent suits they have regardless of sector.
It needs sorting out and there's a UN meeting in October on it, but I doubt anyone will agree to anything.

It's quite sad that people think apple is special just because media only focuses on apple and not ever other companies out there.

They are often the same people who complain about how many column inches the media devote to Apple.

As I pointed out before, most companies don't have records of their CEOs/founders bragging about "stealing" ideas whilst suing other companies claiming they're stealing their ideas. If you find this hard to understand, I can only see one reason for this.

Other companies do it, no one is denying that. Apple however do it the most and are pretty obnoxious about it.

Rubbish, other companies do exactly the same, again it just not main stream news.

Remember MS saying everyone was stealing there UI

Perhaps you should look at some stats.
Or case lists
http://www.patstats.org/Cumulative_Caselist_thru_4Q11.xls
http://www.ipwatchdog.com/2011/08/02/patent-litigation-statistics-1980-2010/id=17995/

You might want to have a look at the health industry which has far more cases than apples 13 only which 6 of them apple started for that quarter. Medtronic on there own has 29cases, Microsoft also in 29 cases.

How is it rubbish? Most companies don't have records of their CEOs/founders bragging about "stealing" ideas whilst suing other companies claiming they're stealing their ideas. Apple does, this adds to the problem people have with them.

I've already acknowledged that other companies act in a similar way over patents, I'm not denying it.

Allready given example of MS, stealing Ui and then going on to sue others for stealing it's Ui.
Like most people you seem to think mainstream media reports all news and as such see apple as different. They aren't any different. Nothing about them is different. It's business as normal, everyone does it.

But they're not bragging are they?

As for me being selective, really? How do you explain you ignoring "I've already acknowledged that other companies act in a similar way over patents, I'm not denying it. " then?

Why are you talking about mainstream media reports? I don't recall Steve Jobbs's bragging about stealing ideas being plastered all over "mainstream media reports"...

Wow
