My sister is looking to upgrade her Apple Watch series 3. What is the sweet spot nowadays for value for money against features?

For example the series IIRC incorporated GPS and Water resistance. Is there a step up in capability or battery life with a certain generation?

Series 8 would be my pick. Series 7 isn’t far off but finding a good used one with a solid battery health can be hard.

Really appreciate the response. Is there a feature that makes the difference for you or is it just that they're available for cheaper but still have a lot of the features of the later models?

Series 7 and 8 are vey similar. If you can find a 7 with good battery health and cheap enough that might make sense. But keep in mind a refurb direct from Apple series 9 starts at 299. I’d want a Series 7/8 for a good bit less. Lots of sellers over value their Apple Watches. I’ve bought 2 mint Series 10 (which are the current models) from eBay for 300 each.

Series 7 introduced the bigger screen which is the same on the 8 and 9. Check out the comparison link for the full feature set. Most updated are minor.

I’d say the sweet spot would be a series 9 as that one comes with the neural engine and is likely to have all/most new features going forward, where’s the 7/8 are already missing stuff like sleep apnea detection etc.

Though if she keeps them for 7 years which looks like she does just get whatever is newest, she’d get her moneys worth out of it.

That’s a good point. She buys and uses, she doesn’t compulsively chop and change like her brother :D

I "upgraded" my wife's Series 4 to a 10 and she sill can't tell any difference she says haha

If you can get a 7/8 in good condition I'd say that would be best.
