I have had my Macbook a year at the end of this month so the warranty will end. I've never had any problems with it, I've also upgraded the memory from 1GB to 2GB's and hard drive from 100GB to 160GB (not through apple).

Can anyone help me with the following questions

Is it worth buying Applecare, if so is ebay ok to buy it from as i can make a £70 saving?

Will the upgrades i've done affect applecare warranty?

Although i received my Macbook from Apple towards the end of september will they count the warranty from when it was ordered or shipped ?

Is there anyway through Apple website i can enter my serial number and find out exactly when my warranty started/ends?

Thanks guys

The warranty starts from the shipping date.

As for the bits you upgraded (they don't void any warranties in themselves) so I can't see them not repairing it, but it's advisable to put the original RAM and hard drive back in when sending it off.

Best bet is to go to Apple>About this Mac and click on the OS X version number (tip ;)), from here write down the serial and model number and call Apple directly quoting the numbers to attain your remaining warranty status.

Be careful when buying off ebay.. someone might be selling a particular Applecare (i.e. specific to a MBP), or it could be someone selling a HE Applecare pack which might affect things should you need to claim.

If it is legit go ahead, but for £70 you're better off playing it safe (if you feel you need the extra 2 years parts and labour coverage).

Hope this helps :)

Can't ever say for sure but make sure you buy it through PayPal that way you won't get stung.

Shouldn't do as long as you haven't take the system apart in a way not described in the manual then you should be fine however you can call apple to find out. Phone them and find out... 0800 039 1010, Speak to the support people.

Enter your serial number into the bit at the bottom of this web-site and you will be told.

EDIT: Damn! EVH Beat me!

Thanks Guys

I tried the link for the serial number and it told me i have until the 29th of September. I'm going to get warranty just for peace of mind!

The ebay deal i found is £124 + £4 p&p He as lots of excelent feedback but he won't accept paypal because in his words "I no longer accept paypal on my listings, recent & growing experience show paypal to be a corrupt company" instead he accepts NOCHEX (which i have).

I need to buy applecare asap so what would you guys do, Save £72 and chance with the ebay deal or pay £200 (twice as much as much as my home contents insurance) and deal directly with Apple?

Just seems a stupidly high price for insurance when you can get similar cover for PC laptops for around £30 :(

Its more than just a warranty, its an Apple warranty. Lol

All jokes aside you get software support as well which is great it also covers Cinema Displays (if bought at the same time as your Mac) and peripherals like the keyboard, mouse, wifi base station and any thing like that made by Apple is covered and has full telephone support.

I honestly wouldn't buy it without paypal, thats a lame excuse to me and I would not touch it with a barge pole on ebay unless its through paypal because I know paypal has a £500 protection on ebay purchases, NOCHEX is illegal on ebay (afaik) and is not as safe as paypal.

I was in the same position, and decided to buy it straight from Apple.

I mentioned the Ebay offerings, and he said that the Warranty is matched to a machine so would not work - but perhaps he would say that?

Not worth the risk, IMHO.

That's a bunch of tosh :)

I sold my macbook and have the applecare remaining, I popped into a store and the genius recommend that I should sell it on ebay, he assured me that nothing would be linked to account. I've sold it on MM to Pumaz anyhow.

That seems to be 1:1.

Would he have put that in writing?
