Hello all :)

Ok hardware setup in sig, and im running windows 7 x64.

Windows is starting up in around 60 seconds including bios screen.

But when i open programs for the first time for example outlook 2010, internet explorer, opera they take around 15/20 seconds to open which seems a fair while compared to other systems ive built and seen.
I have family members whos pc specs are no where near mine and yet there program response time right after windows load is instant no delays.

I have no stability issues and games seem to run fine, its just the general feel on the desktop can be sluggish compared with lesser systems.

any ideas ?

oh and im using a netgear wireless router dgnd3300 v2 and wireless adapter wnda3100 v2

Hard drive problems? Is it on the blink?

Is it full?

Has it been defragged?

Is your OS reporting the right amount of memory? Could be a dislodged / broken mem stick, making the OS page like crazy.

Is the HD being constantly accessed when starting an application?

Interested in a SSD to rocket-boost the OS and your applications? I'd recommend a OCZ Vertex 2E 64GB on offer this week, failing that, a crucial C300 64GB. Too expensive, then a Sandforce 40 GB (COrsair or OCZ, leaning towards OCZ for reputation), then the Intel X25V.

???

many thanks for reply.

just done a complete re install 2 days ago.

os reporting 4 gig ram correctly.

nothing accessing drive when programs start no activity.

no antivirus installed at present to isolate possible issue.

not been defragged as new install.

been looking at ssd which i will do soon but other systems which are quicker on program startup are using standard hard drives so was just trying to isolate current part or software causing issue. once again thanks for all input.

What I'd do on a fresh install..

Check the BIOS, see if hard drive is not running is some outdated mode, disable floppy.

Quick check in Windows events log, to see if there is something unusual popping up.

Making sure drivers are up to date. Running quick benchmarks to see if anything's unusually slow (windows experience index, ATTO on the drive, Sysmark, furmark, superpi, memtest, ...).

Maybe I misunderstood, but if you are not running antivirus / real-time malware protection, that would be something I'd look into.

- Checking the process list (hijackthis), the Startups, installing Adware + Avast or any other combination of free stuff (AVG, spybot, Microsoft Security Essentials, which I am running now). I'd stay away from McAffee / Norton's rotten, bloated corpses. But you say fresh install, so unlikely.

Or maybe your system is just slow. :) But looking at hardware, should be nippy.

From experience, my outlook at work is a snail and a memory hog. Internet explorer, I wouldn't know I never use it. I know Opera, back in the days, wasn't the quickest at startup. I use Chrome, which is quick.

Check resource monitor, performance monitor applications.
Use task manager, check for processes, programs hogging CPU resources. Do you need them running?
Configure program priorities in task manager, program A over program B etc.
Disable windows defender, I always do.
Check firewalls and allocate ports manually if possible. Including router settings.
CPU ramping, is it always at max cycles.
Update all drivers, allow drivers which are not windows certified to make sure that W7 is not preventing them loading.
andy.

windows tends to need a reinstall every 6 months to keep it running well..

I'd invest an hour in reinstalling.... the machine will fly afterwards

Try benchmarking the HDD and comparing it to some reviews (I think there is a website benching a huge amounnt of HDDs but can't remember it) that would give you an idea of what the problem is.

ok hd tach burst speed is 236.6mb, randon access 13.4ms, average read 122.3mb, which dont seem to bad for that drive.

in event viewer under diagnostics - performance i have lots of warnings and some errors and a few critical boot up messages event id 100 Boot Duration : 98355ms

does this help diagnose a potential problem

ordered

ok today ive ordered the - OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E SSD 2.5" SATA-II Read 285MB/s Write 275MB/s 50,000 IOPS from elsewhere due to a cheaper price, will post results hopefully tomorrow :D
