Hi guys.

Finally got my server up and running with 8GB or RAM (10GB in total). Im only running one VM so far via Hyper V and i see i have the option to either apply Static or Dynamic RAM in the VM's settings.

I currently have it set to 1000mb but i want it to run as smooth as possible when using it to assist me with my studies. The VM itself is currently running Windows 7 Enterprise. Apart from that, the server wont be doing much else so distribution of the 10GB of RAM isnt something i need to keep an eye on.

Any help much appreciated as ever!!

If you have enough ram to allow 2GB for the host and then enough for each of your VM's, then leave it Static.

I have 24GB in mine, I leave 4GB for the host (MS recommend 2GB but hey) and allocate the remaining 20GB to VM's:
2x 4GB machines, 4x 2GB machines, and 3x 1GB machines. This leaves enough RAM for me to add 1 more 1GB machine before I need to look at dynamic ram.

Yea, I have it set at Static for now with 3gb of RAM seeing im only running the one VM but i'll have another look down the line. I just wasnt too sure on what one but i knew i wasnt going wrong in selecting Static.

The VM runs much smoother now. Once i up the RAM to 16GB i may even increase it another GB just for that little bit more but anymore and theres no point really.

Thanks for the reply!!

I can't understand not wanting to use Dynamic memory really! You set a minimum and max and away you go, it will just allocate RAM when it is needed :)

Depends how intensive the usage is going to be... I've experienced quite a few problems with dynamic RAM at work.

Basically - if you are absolutely certain that they won't all be vying for the same resources at the same time, then play with dynamic. If you know it could fluctuate, then stick with static.

Dynamic can be an absolute nightmare... but it all depends on usage.
