Applying Artic Silver?

The latest recommendation from Intel is to make a cross of thermal paste on the heat spreader and lay on the heat sink. It works extremely well too.

So simple why did i not think if this before, saves trying to spread it evenly with a bit of plastic.

No - Intel tech told me about 5 days ago. If you have a look at the bottom of the latest stock coolers you will see they have laid the thermal compound out in 3 lines like a funny german cross or split diamond, but a simple cross will do as well. You don't need much though.
 
Would that cross be a + or an X? Tbh I would have thought a cross could cause some bubbles..I always used the credit card/razor blade method which gave me best temps. Maybe its time to experiment.

I used an x - I don't know about bubbles - I just commented on the fact that they had changed the pattern on *** base of the heatsink and he said just to make a cross - it was the best way to put it on. They run so cool compared to Prescott's that I'm not sure it's a big deal any more.
 
I always used to use a PU bag streatched over my finger and worked AS into both surfaces to fill imperfections in the heatsink and heat spreader, this gives a very very thin layer on each that when mated works very well.
 
I've always gone for the blob in the middle, add hsf and twist slightly method. A cross would be good as long as you dont put too much on, and I imagine it's very easy to do that.

Never spread with credit card/razor blade etc, just gets dust in there.

Have you ever treid that with AS5? it is ny imposible to spread that way. Its very thick, compared to AS2/3
