Is it ok to apply for multiple positions at a company?

The positions are professional middle management roles for a large firm of it makes any difference.

Is it ground upon to apply for multiple positions?

If you are able to do the jobs then why not. Only thing I would say would be avoid usual advice and NOT tailor your to each position. You will look a bit strange with multiple versions of the CV.

Not something I have experience in so might not be a good approach but I wonder if it would (if applicable) be better to approach HR and say that they have a number of openings you feel you have experience in/they'd benefit from having you in?

If they have an internal Resourcing team then I'd speak to them and explain your position rather than applying for multiple roles seemingly at random.

As above, wouldn't just apply for everything since the chances of you being suitable for all of them is unlikely. If the positions are really similar then their internal recruitment should be able to work that out and consider you for the roles.

I've done it before (not at the same time but relatively close together) without any joy. IMO based on the information provided I would have been a good candidate for one job and a fair candidate for the other.

Looking at it from the other side the obvious reaction is "this person doesn't know what they want to do" however I think in the modern job market especially in my sector it isn't uncommon for people to be a potential fit for multiple jobs. IF you've got experience and/or qualifications in multiple areas then multiple roles may be a suitable move at any given time, and applying for them doesn't necessarily mean you aren't committed to either of those roles, it just means you aren't committed to your current job.

My boss deliberately overlooked a candidate once because she had applied for multiple positions in our company. The line they took was that she didn't really know what she wanted if she was applying for differing positions. So when it comes to interviewing time and they ask you why you want the job, you may then have to explain away why you did so for completely different roles.

If you are applying to an HR function, they will consider you for anything they think you might be suitable for.

If you send mutiple applications you run the risk of looking like you don't know what you want or possibly even a bit of a nutcase. Do not do this.

I have the best part of 20 years experience in staffing.

If they are internal and you are suited to the role, then I see no problem

Just don't go chasing pie in the sky positions or you will look stupid. ;)
