Applying Thermal Paste?

What is the best method to apply thermal pstae to a cpu, a lot of people say to put a blob in the middle of the cpu, but how much is a blob? The way i applied it on to my old cpu was by just drawing an outline of a square half way between the edge of the cpu and the center

When using Arctic Silver I do it just as the official guides say:

I find the Arctic silver way to be as good as any, it is really hit and miss trying to cover it with a smear and if your CPU is concave then the Actic way will give better results.

Not often the case but the simplest way is best.
