Should I use a pea sized amount in the centre or cover the whole area?

Seems to be a lot of discussion about which is most effective.

Also, does anybody know if the Zalman CNPS9900 Max comes with it pre-applied? I know my Arctic Cooler did.

Cheers

Personally Ive never seen the sense in just apply a pea and whack it on.

In no world will that paste ever then spread to every corner.

Every corner that produces heat.

Whack some on then spread it yourself so you've an even thin layer across the whole chip.

Then, carefully attach the HS.

the pea is a tried and tested method and recommended by most companies (and the line method) , depending on your cpu

spreading it yourself is the worst method

I use a really small dot in the middle and spreads nicely. Most of the heat is in the middle. no need to slap it all over the place it just makes a mess.

less is more.

This /\ /\ /\ /\ but you misspelled waste. ;)

rice/pea, line or X depending on chip. If heatsink is flat it doesn't take much. I find many heatsinks are now convex.

also agree on this.
spreading it yourself will introduce air bubbles
