Apprenticeships

Hey all,

After leaving school and doing the first year of a IT course in college I have decided it's really not what I want to do anymore and would much rather start a apprenticeship in something else.

I'm currently waiting to speak to someone at the college about this but thought I would ask you guys in the mean time if anyone has been in a similar situation?

Do all apprenticeships start at a certain time of the year? And what's that best way of going about applying? e.g through the college or directly through the employer?

Try and find an employer yourself, if that's to no avail, get the college to sort it out for you.

The way i applied was through http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/, you can use the search engine on there to find apprenticeships in your area and you can filter the pay, area and type. Then once you apply through there your information is passed onto the employer

Apprenticeships start throughout the year at various times. I started my apprenticeship in July but then the academic year was over but if you start between Sept and May you get on the course whenever you start your job and have enroled in the college.

Crikey, this has made me think that if I could start over again I'd probably take an apprenticeship in a building trade. If you're a decent plasterer, chippie or sparky, there's always loads of work. Plus it has the bonus that you can save yourself a fortune doing work on your own place.

IT is interesting, but I think that if there's ever some sort of disaster and I have to live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, I'm probably not going to be much use to anyone!
