Appy appy joy joy

Apps are usually okay as they should be designed for the smaller screen real estate. However I've noticed that if the app developers can't be arsed to update the app (or there's no business budget left to do so) then the app goes out of date and is no longer supported by the OS (Apple, I'm looking at you!).

Many organisations offer an app for their company or services. I personally prefer to use a Web browser to view them. I'm not keen on having dozens of apps for random websites which I may only use once. I prefer a browser which is not restricted to one company's services. Some, such as banking I do have but most, not so much.

Are you a happy appy chappie or do you prefer a Web site?
The annoying thing is when these websites claim you would get a better experience with their cookie installed on your phone sorry i mean APP

lets face it APP is just a big fat COOKIE harvesting data on your phone

I think this is the case with the Royal Mail app. My package was nowhere to be found on the app. I typed the same tracking number into the mobile website and the tracking information magically appeared.

Wetherspoons app is the only one you need.
This is surprisingly true. I was in a ‘spoons a few years back and posted in a gin group I’m a member of that I was there. They told me to tell them what table I was at and the gins just started arriving. Very civilised.

Nothing better than having a drink turn up on your table ordered by someone a hundred miles away.

Prefer to use a website here as well - I have to roll my eyes at the notifications of "The experience is better when you use the app" - yes because you can't be bothered to make the website version better... some exceptions aside most stuff just doesn't need a dedicated app.

Translate "You can't use a regular ad blocker on an app"

Yup, unless the app does something particularly useful for me I generally don't want it.

For example, if I'm booking train or plane tickets I'll typically do it on my laptop because it's easier to quickly navigate and see the various options, fill out forms that aren't auto-completed etc.. I don't then want a train company or airline app just to use electronic tickets, I have a native ticket/wallet app on my phone and/or I can just use an e-mailed pdf and have that scanned. In the case of an airline app, I will instead aim to have the ticket printed + have an e-mailed pdf as backup, re-booking an airline ticket/possibly having to wait a day for a new flight is enough of a faff that it's not worth risking your phone battery dying or the server/website for the app going down etc.

On the other hand I'm happy to have a taxi company app; that has some actual utility for me.

I do find it annoying when some companies leave you no choice. For example, my smart lights. I can only control them from an app on my mobile. There is no option to do so via a browser. The app itself is a bit dodgy and doesn't always detect when I'm home and such. I was thinking I might be able to use the app store when it comes to Windows 11 via android apps but I think it's only Amazon apps.

Ahhh, this is why you're the most frequent poster in your hangover thread.
