Can anyone explain to me why certain applications in the repositories are not updated as soon as a new version is released? For example, Real Player 10 is in the repository but 11 is available for direct d/l.

Who is responsible for making sure the applications are up to date?

Aside from the Medibuntu repositories, are there any other 'must haves' I can add to my list?

I like apt-get very much. Now I am gaining a little confidence in using it I can see how much simpler it is than the Windows method of application installation :)

I think (and I'm know expert) it takes time to "make it" into the ubuntu repo's. I guess they will to need test the new version itsself and the "repo version".

I'm also assuming there isn't an army of people checking each day for new versions of all the apps. So a lag is to be expected.

The big time lag is the testing phase. They test everything to be sure that all dependencies are covered and that the program will work on whatever release the repo will target. Sometimes they decide that the next version of a particular app will go in the next cycle's repos, rather than backporting it to the current.
