I need a second rig for light 1080p gaming.

By light, I mean...

TF2
Minecraft
Garys Mod

Is an APU upto the job to save a few quid, if so, what is worth a shout?

Or, is it just a game of compromises with it being worthwhile to just spend the extra?

Thanks.

Supposedly we should be right on the cusp of AMD releasing their AM4 motherboards with the B350 chipset. And the new flagship A12-9800 APU.

The online media thought they'd release this month. But there's only 1 day left of this month :p

That combination would probably be great value, and good enough for your needs.

But before that releases, you'd probably be better off with an Intel Celeron chip and an RX 460 or GTX 1050.

As someone that's done that in the past, simply because of severe budget constraints: Don't do it. The second-hand market is your friend, it's incredible the kind of deals you can get so even a good 1080p rig can be had for cheap.

I would only recommend APUs if you don't have any other choice (or play really old games only).

There's a new AMD apu on the horizon that is supposedly has PS4 level of graphical fidelity, can't remember the name but I read the article at weekend on wccftech

That was the Zen CPU cores, with Vega GPU cores APU.

That won't be available until 2H 2017 at the earliest.

The APU that's just about the launch is the last revision of Excavator CPU and GCN1.3 GPU. It's basically the same as what's available now, but with much higher clockspeeds due to matured process. Should be ~20% faster in gaming.

TF2 and Minecraft should be OK on an APU but the only problem is once you hit £100 to £120 on one you can probably get a faster discrete card.

Something like an AMD A8 has a IGP which is around the level of a £40 to £50 graphics card.
