Aquiss

Your traffic to that IP address is being routed via Limburg, Germany.
Not really their fault, but I'm sure Aquiss' upstream provider could route another way to prevent that if they were aware.

I have 8ms from Zen.
Its always been in Germany its a German server, my latency is about 3 times what it used to be on old ISP and when I joined Aquis. Just seems strange

I don't want to be that guy, but this is the sort of request that really should come into our support desk so we can investigate.

We have made no changes since, so I suspect something upstream of us may have changed.

I can do that. It would be great if you could investigate it. Reason I didn't is it's quite trivial

restarted ont and router and it's back to 6ms where it should be, so maybe that all it needed.

Nah, nothing to do with anything within your control here.
It was something between Aquiss' upstream provider and the server provider - one or the other has applied a change to routing. I suspect the former, as they run a tight ship when it comes to the network.

Due my renewal in next few months. Service has been great so will see what the pricing is like again as think the package im on doesnt exist anymore from the site.

You do realise you don't have do the renewal dance with us? Once your min contract completes, you remain exactly as you are, but in a daily rolling contract.

indeed I'm aware it was more in comparison to others at this point as things have moved along. Seen better offers even from you guys for newer customers and had some new providers pop up in this area. Along with some use changes as upload has my use pattern had changed.

Well my CityFiber install should happen on Monday. Fingers crossed it all works out great and the 2.5Gb connection works without a hitch. :)

Dumb question but why does my IP-based location keep changing?

I'm in Edinburgh, I believe that all of aquiss users get plopped out onto the internet in London somewhere. Most IP to location things show me as being in London which is absolutely fine.

However some (poorly programmed) websites use the IP based location and it keeps moving around. It used to be Birmingham, then Loughborough and now it's a place called Congleton.

To be clear, this isn't an issue, just a curiosity.

I don't know the specific answer, but you know you have the option now in the ebilling system to configure Geofeed?

I think it was rolled out a few months ago and allows you to choose, but I've not played with it.

My understanding is traffic is backhauled to a PoP which is where your public IP appears from. Smaller ISPs such as Aquiss don't have PoP's in as many locations such as EE, VM etc, so often your location shows as where they do have one. It is mildly frustrating as you'll get 2FA notifications saying 'did you just log in from London' as an example when you're sat in Birmingham.

By default, all our IPs are listed as being based in London. We publish a geofeed to all the main geoip companies and to ripe, that they can pull to keep themselves updated with our subnets.

We allow you to enable via ebilling, your exact geofeed "Town/City" location, which is added to the geofeed, on an "IP per IP" basis. Within a few weeks all the geoip companies should be pushing this out to their clients.

As for it changing, that I can't answer, it won't be coming from us, but I suspect either those websites are buying in/using low grade geoip data or they are using another form of location checks that is too wild to be useful.
