Were you using a free kit / level 1 guns? They are pretty weak vs the flying arc, except for the Ferro (I don't think you get an Anvil in the free kits?). The key with the Wasps and the Hornets is to shoot the thrusters, not the body. The Ferro can two shot a Wasp (white drone with 4 thrusters and a mounted machine gun) by shooting two thrusters - it'll lose stability and crash. The Hornets (bigger than a Wasp, armoured, and shoots an electrical tazer type thing) can also be two shot if you shoot the two rear thrusters off. Most of the time it'll be facing you so that will be difficult, and with a Ferro it'll take at least 4 shots as you'll need to knock the armor off the front thrusters first. Medium and Light ammo penetrates ARC armor less, so Hornets will be much harder to take down with the low end / free guns if its not the Ferro.
When you're starting out and getting a few quests done your best bet is to avoid them as much as you can and pick your engagements when you have quests that require killing them.
Wasps are far more dangerous than the Hornets. The Hornet you can just roll or sidestep out of the way of the tazer.
If you see the big flying thing called a Rocketeer, avoid at all costs early on and get into a building if it does spot you.
You can ping (middle mouse button) ARC to find out what they're called if you're not sure.
Thanks this is really helpful. I played for ~4 hours this evening with a squad and had a lot of fun! It's really great as a "just one more run" game and even if you lose your stuff it's not a huge deal, at least early on - although most of the time i opt for the 'free' kit and hope for the best. Starting to understand the crafting mechanicis a bit more along with the general gameplay loops. Plenty of things to keep me interested and coming back for more.
The Arc are varied and clever for NPC opponents. I've had them follow me into buildings, flank me, call backup, etc. The way they hide their weak points and try to recover if you blow off their thrusters is great. It'd be good to see more land-based ones in future updates.
It is so refreshing to have some reasonably intelligent enemies but with what feels like a pretty fair chance to beat them. It's struck a good balance of difficulty so far.
PvP is less consistent. Have been killed quite a few times by clearly better squads, but that's all part of the fun. It is quite hard to get healed / recharge shields during a fight yet my enemies seem to be able to do it. Or they have better equipment I guess.
Yet to find any "friendly" raiders and only heard prox chat once, which is a shame.
Try to avoid the arc in most cases. But if you do need to take any down you need to aim at certain parts depending on which robot it is. Get their weak points and you should be fine but avoid getting into a fight with a swarm of them as you'll likely die; in this case run inside!
Anyone else impressed by the ai of the arc? They are quite scary in how they hunt you and find any opening to try and kill you. If you run into a building it'll try and find you inside but if it can't it'll go round to other entrances or openings to try and find you. I haven't really been able to cheese anything due to dumb ai.
As above, really fun to fight against. Difficult, but fair. The first time I saw a Bastion was exciting. Decided it wasn't something to try and fight, yet. Clearly the noise of it had attracted other players. Me and my squad got rinsed by another squad as we ran into a nearby building for cover.
10/10 will be playing again!
The graphics are great too and it seems to run extremely well on my machine.
