GAME: Defender Wiki Page Link
Released: 1981

Defender is a horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Williams Electronics in 1980 and released as an arcade video game in 1981. The game is set on either an unnamed planet or city (depending on platform) where the player must defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting astronauts. Development was led by Eugene Jarvis, a pinball programmer at Williams; Defender was Jarvis's first video game project and drew inspiration from Space Invaders and Asteroids. Defender was demonstrated in late 1980 and was released in March 1981. It was distributed in Japan by Taito.

First tell me, what is arcade? :p

Them big machines you would find in an arcade :D, usually takes coins to play. Not the same as playing the games on system like MegaDrive. Many people build MAME cabinets and have their builds on this forum but I just run it on my PC. If you're still not sure and would like more info, add me on Steam if you have it; Spacedeck.

This is a pretty cool idea! I'll submit a score later today! One suggestion, i think its more of a challenge if we limit credits. I can see you used 9 credits for your score, Or have a separate section for 1 credit scores.

I'm happy to limit to say 1 credit or have a separate leaderboard for it. The only reason I didn't suggest this is because I didn't find any way of seeing how many credits someone used? Where did you find out how many credits it took me? Also can these be viewed for each game as otherwise wouldn't it be hard to check scores are legit?

The last 2 digits in your score represent credits used.. at least in Capcom games. I'm not sure how it works in others. Maybe a 1cc leader board would be a good inclusion.

Ok well if it's easy to figure out how many credits have been used, but if it isn't I suppose I'll just take someone's word for it on a particular game, I'm sure nobody will be out to cheat.

I've updated the OP to include a 1C leaderboard. I didn't know about that credit rule on Capcom games so going to go test that feature out before uploading my 1C attempt. :)

EDIT: Quick test is telling me that on the original credit used, score will be end in 00 but any additional credits added will up the last two digits. So after I died, I inserted my second credit and the two digits jumped to 01, then input my third credit and the score became 02. So going off this, it must mean my OP post used 20 credits (19 extra attempts after the initial 1C to start the game).

I'll get the ball rolling, this is the best I can do tonight.

Many thanks for this
While im setting up my mister i gave it a go in mame - first run was a 16250 - was onto the third level when i realised i could run up and down the bar to pick up the empties and the money, and also go up from the top keg to the bottom keg.

I got this game for xmas on my speccy in 1985 so it has some nostalgia for me but i find myself never playing retro games like this on my mister since theres no challenge, so i hope this thread takes off!

Thanks! I never knew this and I'm amazed I missed ever doing this while playing. This really does help keep control a little longer, some of these alcoholics though, they never stop and go home .

The most important pickup I've found is the money. One you see it, run past whoever is there to pick up. Having some of them turn to the music gives you time to try and keep sending beers to those who are actively coming down.

Some of them can be predictable in how far they will travel back before coming again, so I send them more beers just as they send me the glass. Although clearing enough of them gets hard very fast.

Since the deadline has come and gone, I've now selected a new game; Frogger. This is a highly accessible arcade game, so pretty much everyone on this forum could easily find this game to take part should they wish.

Good luck.
