Any recommendations for software to do architectural-style drawings like the below. I know how to use Sketchup but it's no good for totally flat 2D drawings, unless I'm missing a feature that removes all 3D/perspective.

Sketchup can go flat, if you use a section plane to cut down to the desired height for doorways/windows, change perspective to parallel projection in the camera menu, then select standard views - top, it should change the drawing to a top down view. It can be used to do flat sections too using other section planes and views.

Try ProgeCAD https://www.progesoft.com/ its Autocad compatible and 99% of the user interface is the same. there is a 30day trial and its about £200 for a perpetual licence, although its ability to draw doors and walls is very limited and it still defaults to 3d in that aspect. it also can convert vector PDFs

He probably ought to state that then .........

Also AutoCAD is free if you look in the right places ;)

Free trial also avaliable - https://www.autodesk.co.uk/products/autocad/included-toolsets/autocad-architecture

i wouldn't recommend going that route anymore, since its subscription based i think its hard to keep it activated, (especially if your online all the time). not to mention the trial end error downloading viruses, malware, and having to disable AV to get it to try and work. its just not worth the hastle anymore, i just bought progeCAD and can install it on 2 PCs

This is what I typically do in Sketchup, set to parallel projection:

Use a section plane to cut through about head height

Standard view: Top gives a top down view showing what's left after the cut from the section plane. You can set the height to be as tall or short as you want

im a bit old school still, i work in 2d AutoCAD 99% of the time, and switch to sketchup if i need a visual of the room... im so old school i still use the command line to type commands in rather than goto icons

Thanks so much for this. Don't know if it's an update since I learned it but I didn't know about Parallel Projection. This is exactly what I want, so thanks.

Do you know how to rotate said view by 90 degrees? Using rotate obviously skews the top down view.

A bit late to the party on this one but with SketchUp you can create your model in 3d then there's an associated software called layout where you can either just draw in 2d or export from SketchUp all elevations and sections / plans. As above use parallel projection and in the view menu select front back left right, top and bottom for whichever view you want

Piggybacking off this thread to ask if anyone has a good guide on using SketchUp for creating a room mockup? Never used it before but would like to model my office so I can play around with layout and furnishings in their actual proportions. Not looking to become an expert by any means just need a simple guide. Cheers!

Check out the SketchUp essentials on YouTube. He's got some good beginners guides set in a playlist so that should sort you out with the basics
