Archiving loads of old DVDs

I had a few "CD/DVD Wallet/Folders" filled with approx 1000 films and 200+ TV shows (from 6 episode to 100+) on DVD and, over the space of a more than a decade, I've slowly been able to compress them all onto 1 HD now (8tb) but the quality is Meh so, after spending so much time effort and money, I'm now looking at stream services instead for higher quality versions and only keeping the Meh DVD versions for those that can't be streamed.

Also, UK law is stupid regarding making a back-up copy of your own property for your own use. It's silly bum about face laws like this which are ignored by everyone which make a mockery of those trying to create genuinely worth while Copyright laws.

Surely it's legal as long as you own the films and music?

No it's illegal, just nobody bothers to enforce it. There was some though that it would be finally resolved through some updating of European rules. But i have no idea what came of it or what happens post Brexit.

Given that no action has taken against MS and Apple who supply software to allow user to rip CD in both Windows and Mac OS I don't think the Music industry is particularly concerned by people ripping CD they have purchased to their phones.

As for the OP have a look at Plex

It is not legal to rip copy written CDs or DVDs in this country.
It should be noted that while this is technically correct, it's also not something that can get you in any trouble as the reason it's not legal is due to the legislation that makes it legal being in a transitional process. It was never the intention for this to be illegal it's just that the old legislation protecting it was repealed before the new legislation was ready and that hasn't been put in place yet. The government are on the record as saying it will never be enforced against people making private copies of something they own (this gaurentee was made due to lobbying from Apple among others as the current law makes it an offence to use iTunes lol).

The old wording of the exemption legislation under UK Copyright Law was that people could make "personal copies for private use" of content they "lawfully acquired on a permanent basis" which meant that it was lawful to make copies of materials you had purchased, received as a gift or downloaded from legal sources. Although that legal exemption no longer exists officially, it does in practice and if you stick to it you cannot be prosecuted.

Anyone doing so is breaking UK law.
In that case I have broken the law many times - but only for my own use. I rip some of the TV series in order to encode them in HandBrake for viewing at my own convenience.

In my eyes I should be able to use what I purchased however I see fit as long it is only for my own use.
