Hi all,

...is this a correct statement please.?

Are new iPhones are only locked to a network when turned 'ON' with a SIM for the first time?

Thanks

Nope, I've got an iPhone 6 and had a Three, EE and Vodofone sim inside it.

Most are actually locked. iPhones purchased from Carphone Warehouse will lock to the network of the first SIM inserted.
1) Three do not lock their handsets
2) O2 are not currently unlocking iPhone 6s
3) EE/Orange/T-Mobile require the iPhone to be ACTIVE on your account for at least 6 months and charge £20
4) Vodafone charge £19.99

AFAIK only iPhones purchased from an Apple store are unlocked. I've used mine with sims all over the world.

interestingly it's not the case for every country. When I was in Japan only the iPhone 5s was unlocked to all networks (and that was apparently a recent change) where as the iPhone 6 was sim free but locked to the network you choose at purchase.

I got my iPotato 5 64gb from Three and that locked to the second sim I put in it... that was fun ;)

Had been using it on Three for 6 months... put Swisscom sim in the phone & couldn't put the Three sim or any other back in... grrr

Got 3x iphone 6s, 2 small and 1 large, one from Swisscom and two from Orange... and they are all unlocked.

Incorrect. Some sim free iPhones lock to the first sim used depending where purchased. I've experienced this first hand.

iPhones purchased direct from Apple are always permanently unlocked.

Ouch!
