I think they are perfectly fine, but it never fails to amaze me how many inbreds say stuff like "omg never buying this game it's so bad" ...

An example would be Archeage, a game that's been out for over 2 plus years in other regions but people are willing to pay £109 just to get access to the 'alpha' of this free to play game.

I can sort of understand why someone would do it, but it doesn't seem right. The more people throw money at such project's the more it will happen.

A fool and his money are soon parted is all I can say. Devs must be p****** themselves.

Good example of Beta releases being an issue is CubeWorld. Released as a BETA, got so much hype and was given such potential that even more people purchased it. What happens next? The developers realize they have enough money now to not bother with finishing the game and go out and enjoy their life. Yay for them, booo for all the people who bought the game waiting for it to be finished.

this is basically what I see every developer doing... all the gamers raging hard at all the **** bugs in their **** software, while they're drinking martinis on a yacht in the bahamas

"shouldn't we get back to working on that game"..."what game?"...." I can't even remember..... **** it".... " wooooo moneyyy"

I try to avoid most of the early access stuff where possible. Although I have bought a couple of them, KSP and Prison Architect, both of which I did quite a bit of reading up on before buying.

Personally what what bugs me more is when big games release a Beta so close to the launch date that they are unable to make any meaningful changes before launch. So in effect it is just a Demo but with the Beta tag attached so they can use it to side step any major issues that may pop up.

The truth is, most of these games are niche and are made for the love of it, not for the money as there is is none if you want to take a living wage from it with a family to support, unless you are lucky to have a smash on your hands which is unlikely.

Some good input in this thread, thanks guys. Gave me something to read.

The points raised by Gimpy are true I guess. We have the option to avoid them. Most of the time I do avoid them, however the people that dont still fuel this stupid trend :(

If a developer already has sold their game as an alpha/beta, where is the incentive to finish the game? DayZ standalone is a perfect example.
.

Yup,They already made their money so why do more work.

Seriously though this is wrong and shouldn't be allowed..i mean what has gone on with Dayz standalone since release..have they completely abandoned the game now because i've not heard of any further development been done.

DayZ SA was the only game I bought into and I feel like I have been lied to, I bought it due to the success of the MOD of which I bought ARMA II based on the strength of that alone, then I was duped because I was told how great the SA would be but instead all that has changed are the hats and by gum there are lots of them but they are outweighed in their numbers by the bugs that haven't been fixed.

hashtag in a forum post?

Better than people who use smiley faces instead of capital letters and full stops.
Or the ones who continually whinge about a poxy £20 they stuck down on a game. Totally forgetting they got hundred of hours out of the free mod.

Dean needs to eat also. :p

I'm usually bored with games (the few ive bothered with) before they get out of early access, so yeah I think it's bloody awful.

I've played their game in it's worst state and paid a pretty penny for it. If the games were £5 a pop, then it's different.

I backed Satellite Reign. Today I read that they are planning Steam early access and even giving backers alpha/beta access before that. Does not compute. I backed it because I loved Syndicate/Wars and want a really polished modern take on those classics, I don't want to be an unpaid beta tester

Trolling or just a complete donut?

Hours of play on a free mod means I shouldn't whine about paying any amount for what is essentially a broken game?!?

Go back to sticking your head in the sand.

?

You will still get what was advertised before you backed, what is the problem.

You do not have to participate in the early access.

What should they do NOT give backers Alpha/Beta access?

Public Alpha/Beta access is not "in place of" game testing before release.

If you want to help, help, if not, dont, just wait for "gold".

I remember as a kid, writing to developers/publishers of Spectrum games for "tester versions" (I now know to be called alpha/beta ;) ).

We now have the ability to get the game at a discount, get in on the early stages of development, we still complain.

Cubeworld pretty much ensured that I'll never back an early access game again. I understand fully that you're giving money to help with the continued development, and that it's a gamble, but in wollay's case they seem to have just taken the money and gone on holidays for a year :(
