Are British homes sub standard?

He showed me pictures of places with a rental value of 2.5k a month for a one bed. Some were pretty awful.

Even if it's in London, a 1-bed @ £2500/month?

My 1-bed in Stafford is just over 1/10th of that @ £270/month, on a repayment mortgage. 16 years down, 9 to go on my 25-year term.

Talk about urinating your hard-earned cash up the wall!

Cheapest 1 bed flat around where I live/work in Somerset is £485/m... and anything that isn't a complete dive in a bad area starts at £645.

It had dipped down during the pandemic - I guess due to a glut as people moved back with parents for social and/or employment reasons but climbing steeply again now for 1-2 bed flats.

EDIT: For a mortgage you'd be paying ~£525 for the cheapest 1 bed in a not **** area.

Most landlords are happy to let a property as long as it passed building regulations.
No need to have a good finish and be luxuriously furnished. It affects their RoI and increases risk; higher rent means less people are likely to be able to afford it.

Are there British homes with above standard finishes? Yes, but don't expect to pay anything under £2k per month for them.
Those that can easily afford £2k pcm are more likely to purchase a home than rent.
