are choppers safer?

Why do you think they are?

The constant vibrations and noise cant be good for you :p

Id say safer in the sense all they do is 40mph everywhere and only ride to the local cafe for a spot of wife swapping :D

No.
Nice idea if you are on a yanky stretched out road but hardly the ideal bike for getting around Britain.

well i just thought that with a normal bike you are more at risk of going over the handlebars and into a car / head first onto the floor, whereas on a chopper the laid back sitting position makes that less likely.

I had a ride on my dad's old soft-tail and I was suprised by the speed and handling, though the brakes are....****

So if you hit someone on a chopper style bike you're more likely to be torn in half as opposed to thrown off

More likely to loose your nads then :p

Althought it may sound bad but ive known a few guys to run into the back of cars and because of the sportsbike position be voulted into the air and over the car, they were injured but not as much as head on into something lol, just pray whatever you go into the back off aint a 4x4 :/

The laid back driving position is the one thing that is against them. For most riding you want to be upright to see over at least 3 cars. Even sports bikes compromise this, A Sports Tourer or a Commuter bike would be the Safer option.

hmm i guess this is a good point. didn't think of it like that!

For the safest bike what you need is a BMW boxer twin (any of the models :p), I know an ex police rider who still has his legs thanks to the stick out engine pods lol, during a chase the car shquashed him and his bike between the car and central reservation, any other bike and he would have no legs, also theyre build like a panzer tank they never break lol, and they ride much better than you would think ;-) I love them lol

lol?

Anyway, I don't think 'choppers' are any safer. They're generally slower, steer like a toddler, visibility is worse and they have more pointy bits to stick in you when you crash.

ye well i have a huge urge to get a motorcycle licence, but i don't like the risk factor. i ride a bicycle at the moment and i can see how many really bad drivers there are out there.

but i figure if i were to ride very defensively then i'd be just as safe as on a bicycle.

Better off on a supermoto type bike? Decent height, great manoeuvrability. You won't look like a mid-life crisis on it either.

I can be counted as one of those statistics. When i hit the mondeo side on just over a year ago, i was vaulted over the car instead of going straight into it. Was lucky i had a high up position from the Fazer.

the geometry of a chopped bike means they turn in slow, don't hold desired line mid corner, don't transfer enough weight to front tyre under braking... a total disaster.

oh, forgot you have to wear leathers with braided bits dangling down ;)

i can see the appeal though of that lazy style riding, but it is pretty dam dangerous, especially on our twisty roads :(

fair enough, seems i hadn't factored in the fact that the turning would be shot! just want to find the safest way to get into biking!

I dunno, also you have to think about the flex in the forks, it's gonna be pretty bad at the best of times..

I guess it aint a problem if your just cruising about, just you can't push them :(, it's a different style of riding.. more about the open air freedom, certainly not about hooning about :)

Like others I'd say safest bikes on the roads are supermoto style, road tyres / brakes with trails upright 'seeitall' riding position..

The main worry of riding a bike is whether it's gonna drag you down the road with it if you were to come off. Handling etc can be countered with your own riding ability but I'd say choppers aren't the safest.
