Are computer games more complex than chess?

Chess is regarded as prestigious intellectual pursuit, but are computer games more complex? If you think about the number of "moves" possible in Starcraft II, and the number of variables, surely it's thousands of times more complex?

What do you think?

I think you think to much :D

lolkwerk? dvdbunny?

in chess there are many options

in a game theres usually 1-2 over powered "moves" and the fastest person wins

Interesting question!
Chess is a very technical game, computer games are very much for the moment.

I'd say chess is far more "complex" for the simple fact your controlling 16 players at any one time while contemplating the moves of 16 other players.

I'd say games are more complex in terms of RTS games.

Chess isn't extremely complex yet incredibly balanced. When one person makes a move it opens up moves for his opponent and professional chess players can see multiple moves ahead.

RTS games aren't turn-based and the movement of units isn't set.

Chess is more complex.

The only games I guess that would come kind of close are strategy games. But even then I'd say there is less to think about/focus on.

With chess I would say it depends on how many moves ahead your thinking.
I love a game of chess.

.

Go watch professional starcraft BW or 2 and then say that XD

Cant really speak for starcraft as i've never played it but chess players are renouned for contemplating x amount of moves ahead for every conceivable move calculated.
Its probably my lack of exposure but i find it hard to think of a gamer on that sort of level.

A better comparison than RTS would be a 1v1 game of Civilization. Now that could make for some interesting intellectual battles.

Kamwah: Your point on chess being incredibly ballanced is so true. Its design is almost perfect in the number and types of pieces you have and their attributes. A handful of pieces can hold their own against a full board. But at the same time, a handful of pieces in a force cannot necessarily dominate the board.
