Are contact sports in trouble?

I guess the problem with a hand off is you don't necessarily have time or are able to aim it, you just see your opponent and then attempt to push them away to prevent the tackle. It's always been a vital part of rugby, but now surely any player, from grass-roots to international level is going to think "if I throw up a hand-off against someone and injure them, am I going to get sued?"

For a starters the ref gave a free kick when I was fouled but not when I was the challenger.

The opposition players apologised for the challenge on me at the end of the game, the opposition were telling me it wasn't my fault and not to feel bad when it was me putting the challenge in.

There's various ways you could distinguish it.

then surely the rugby player in question has no case as everyone seems to think it was a fair challenge etc. if he is sued and is successful then that would open the door for the lad with the broken legs to sue you.

That's disgraceful.

Didn't that French plank realise that winning a case like this could have serious impact on the game in general? Let alone every other contact sport? I'm not sure who the biggest **** is, Rougerie or the judge. When you walk out on to the pitch, you take your chances and if a hand-off catches you in a soft spot, you have to deal with it.

Playing rugby, I've had concussion twice, been knocked unconscious and even had studs slide down my face (causing me to fall unconscious at work in a rather comical way the next day :D) but never once thought about suing anyone.

Actually, thinking about it a little more, the biggest **** is definitely Rougerie. The judge is probably just the usual clueless old fool that you find giving out brainmeltingly unjustified punishment all over the world.

if there was going to be a law it should be that anyone who plays a contact sport at professional level has an insurance policy that would fully underwrite the cost of any medical care/loss of earnings. I don't do anything at anywhere near professional level but because i regularly take part in full contact sports I make sure that my personal insurance policies cover me for private hospital care if anything should happen to me.
