Are desktops trying to do too much?

I use XFCE, it seems to work quiet well, which is kinda in between of a minimalist one and one with a crap load of things on.

i think gnome is ace, for my mind its the most logically laid out.

This is the beauty of linux, if u dont like gnome theres loads of other options!!!! :D

I used to use windowmaker, because when I first got properly into Linux I was using Litestep on my win98 machine, with NOTHING on the desktop but a commandline a sometimes a little dock, so WM was familliar to me. My mates found both totally impenetrable (especially litestep actually), so when I recycled my last windows machine into the stupidly overpowered (it's sort of an HTPC/web-machine-everything except games and cubase basically, type of machine), Gentoo box, as in my sig, I stuck KDE on it, a minimal one, but KDE. Gentoo have not added 4 to their safe portage tree yet, and I am NOT installing anything as big and stroppy as KDE while it's still masked as dodgy.

As for the comment made about the names.....I remember a simillar, but infinitely less well-reasoned, less pleasant, and less clueful comment from a winshill on a Linux newsgroup years ago. My response was somthing like........

Take a literate, intelligent person who has never seen a computer before.....ask them to find certain things based on the description you give them, from the choices listed.

1. Find a thing that deals with mail.
A. Outlook Express
B. KMail

2. Find something for making those annoying management presentations.
A. Powerpoint.
B. Kpresenter

And so on.

He did not respond

gnome's fairly obsessed with gnames too. :)

Then again ask him to:
1. Find a web browser
A. Internet Explorer
B. Firefox

2. Find an instant messenger
A. Windows Messenger
B. Pidgin

Find a remote desktop application
A. Remote Desktop
B. Krfb

...and so on. Linux is notorious for having terrible gibberish names like Joomla! and Kopete, while Windows is notorious for having terrible obvious and uncreative names like Word, Internet Explorer, and Media Player.

It's just a bit of the cultures that create each.

window maker rocks. It's my favourite and what I used when I ran linux in the late 90's/early 00's

I noticed with great interest this on the window maker website:
windowmaker.info has been brought online as of early July, 2008. We are currently working on reimplementing the site in a more modern, safe fashion, while at the same time restoring all services required for development and communication. With that said, we are working very hard to revitalize Window Maker's presence on X Window (and perhaps beyond) desktops. With this new focus, we can now truly assert that Window Maker will be resuming active development very soon. We expect to once again provide the de-facto minimalist yet extremely functional window manager to the world.

But haven't heard anything since. Anyone know what's up?

kewl, I'll try that tommorow, was worried I was going to have to raise a defect and wait then.

My job is raising defects, it's not an interesting process any more for me.
