Are lots of people still playing bf2 online?

Meh, we'll see where ArmA 2 is in four years. 
As for unlocks, your account needs to play one game of SF and that's it as far as I know. Once it has registered that you've played a game of SF the unlocks from it are available to be unlocked on your account and therefore in BF2.
All the files etc for them are in BF2 and the patch. EF/AF have their own extra variations of the weapons for the different nationalities armies but they are not available as unlocks in the main game.
