Perusahaan Otomobile Nasional Berhad, or PROTON, was incorporated on 7th May 1983 to manufacture, assemble and sell motor vehicles and related products including accessories, spare parts and other components.

Proton produced Malaysia's first car the Saga (MPI) which was launched in July 9th 1985 by the then Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad who had originally conceived the idea of a Malaysian motor car.

The model range in Malaysia now consists of Waja (Impian), Satria, Wira, Iswara (MPI), Arena (Jumbuck), Perdana, Juara, GEN-2 and Savv

My dad has been driving a proton waja (no idea what its called here) in malaysia for 3 years and he said its the best car he's had in ages :eek:

no - i was just being obnoxious as i think calling it racism is a little excessive.

Never managed to brake my dad's horrific old proton 1.5 auto, nomatter how badly I treated it. Still, reliability itself is no reason to inflict such a machine on yourself - there are plenty of good, reliable cheap cars about.

Arsebiscuits. They're simple cheap transport that can be fixed simply and cheaply if they break, which isn't half as often as you badge snobs would care to admit.

You're a bit of a plonker, you are. :rolleyes:

Me an' our kid had a 1.5MPI for about a month - it started on the button, was reasonably spritely, everything worked - it basically did what it said on the tin. It was certainly a lot more fun than some of the Corsa's/Fiesta's that I've driven.
We bought it for £40 to banger race, and then ended up selling it on the bay to some students who were doing one of these budget gumball rally's. :)
 
Funnily enough, my bro has just forwarded this mail to me.......he must have got in touch with the new owners to see how it was. :cool:

"The car was fantastic!
We got in touch with Proton UK who saw the publicity of a 13 year old car being driven so far. So in return for a bit of publicity they fitted a new radiator, brake pads and gave it a full service. They took our photos and sent articles about us into Autocar magazine and also Zoo magazine!

We travelled a total of 3600 miles in 8 days, and the car was superb. Quick and comfortable on the motorways, and surprisingly good on the Alpine passes. Some other cars (including a Jaguar and a Mercedes) broke down along the way, but we never had a problem. And on the Italian Autoroute we hit a GPS-verified 100mph!!!

The organisers had another event a month after we got back (this time going to Rome instead of Naples), and we sold the car to a team who were taking part in that event (their Saab blew a head gasket one week before the event). The Proton made it there and back again, so it covered a total of 7000 miles on 30-odd days.
We're considering buying it back for next year.

We had a total blast doing the event, raised around £750 for charity (the Everyman campaign), and the car was an absolute star."
