I have a freezer pro cpu cooler and this is my first intel system ive built. The push pins locking system on the intels seem rather flimsy, are they? cos a amd cpu coolers looks much safer then the intels.. I keep expecting the push pins to give way when accedently knock the cooler while working inside my case

How strong is this locking method, cos it doesnt look nearly as strong as amd's method?

The Intel push in pins, are rubbish, i remember installing a stock cooler with a few mates, took as about 8 attempts to get it right.

It should be quite secure if you're doing it right (strong enough for you to be able to pick the board up by the heatsink in my experience) - mind, doing it right may involve you taking the motherboard out to ensure all four pins are in correctly.

i had a gemini II cooler when i first built my system and it was such a pain in the a** to install but eventually i got it doen and went to see the results and they were rubbish so i tried it again which was another pain and once again the results were pretty poor considering the extremity of it. I then decided to give the stock cooler that came with my cpu a go and it took 2 secs to install and the temp was dropped by 10c so they aint all that bad in my opinion.

Never had a problem with them and i have installed/uninstalled quite a few now. Always fit first time too. They click when you get it locked. A couple of heatsinks you have to remove the fan first (Freezer 7 Pro for one) but that's no big hassle.

When installing the stock cooler for a q6600, I had to use so much force it was unreal; as only three of the four pins would click into place:mad:

I had trouble when doing it with a mate's E2140 a few months back, but it was a breeze doing it with my housemate's E1200 over the weekend. Things runs silly cool, idling at 17ºC :)

You know if your installing the cpu cooler with the board out of the case, you need to rase the board off the table for the pins to go in??, and you need to make sure the pins ar in the locked postion before pushing them in?

They're not too bad on the first fitting, but once the cooler's been fitted a few times the pins tend to splay when you try and push them through, or else won't lock in properly. When I upgraded to my Q6600 it took me about half an hour to get my Freezer 7 to clip on properly. I'm still a bit worried that it might fall off and take my 8800GT out... I had a lot more trust in the AMD 939-style fitting.
